Job description

Role and Facility Information

Come work as an Addictions Physician with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Vancouver Detox is a withdrawal management centre in Vancouver. The 24-bed inpatient centre operates seven days a week, staffed with 24-hour nursing support, providing medication-assisted withdrawal management for individuals with substance use disorders. It serves as a critical entry point for stabilization and linkage to outpatient and bed-based treatment options. Physicians will deliver evidence-based, high-quality substance use care, including management of acute withdrawal, OAT initiation and titration, harm reduction education, and linking patients with psychosocial treatment post-discharge. They will also manage other primary care treatments, including mental health and chronic disease management, during detox admission until patients are stabilized for discharge. The team comprises nurses, counsellors, community-liaison workers, and peer support workers.

Vancouver Withdrawal Management Centre is an 18-bed lower acuity facility with similar services.

Physicians must have completed the BCCSU Provincial Opioid Addiction Treatment Support Program (POATSP) training.

Reporting to the Medical Coordinator for VCH Withdrawal Management and the Medical Director of the Specialized Substance Use Services Program, the physician will play a key role in developing an inter-professional shared care team. Responsibilities include providing direct clinical services, fostering a collaborative practice environment, and ensuring client-centered, culturally competent, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care. Effective communication and teamwork are essential.

Hours of Work
  • 6-15 weeks per year depending on FTE percentage.
  • 8 hours daily, available onsite between 9:00-17:00.
  • Typically 2 physicians per day.
  • Commitment to evenly distribute work throughout the year, including less desirable shifts (e.g., Christmas every 5 years, summer).

VCH withdrawal management staffing includes single days or weeklong blocks, with 7 hours per day onsite between 9:00-16:00, usually 2 physicians per day. Opportunities exist to work in a doc of the day model with 1-2 fixed days per week, with similar staffing commitments.

Education, Licensing, & Experience
  • Full, current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC) license (Mandatory).
  • Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) or Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCP).
  • Experience in inpatient withdrawal management.
