Job summary

PCL Constructors Canada Inc. is seeking an Estimating Student for our Atlantic Canada district in Halifax for a 4‑month assignment starting January 2027.

You will learn estimating manuals, assist with quantity surveys, and interact with lead estimators and subcontractors to support pricing decisions. You’ll gain hands-on experience on real projects, with mentorship, and access to career pathways within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree or diploma in civil engineering or a related field.
• Ability to read blueprints and interpret construction documents.
• Familiarity with MS Office and drafting software.

Responsibilities

• Understand and utilize estimating manuals, systems and forms.
• Review quantity survey assignments with lead estimator or Chief Estimator.
• Perform assigned quantity survey tasks and provide quantities for pricing.
• Transfer quantities to lead estimator and support subtrade solicitations.
• Assist bid document control and bid day assignments.
• Visit job sites periodically and develop subcontractor relationships.

Responsibilities

Join us as an Estimating Student for our Atlantic Canada district, within our Canadian Buildings sector for 4 months starting January 2027. Depending on your assigned project as an Estimating Student, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our team by:

• Understanding and utilizing PCL’s estimating manuals, systems and forms.
• Reviewing quantity survey assignment with lead estimator or Chief Estimator.
• Performing assigned quantity survey.
• Giving quantities of major purchase items to purchasing department for pricing.
• Transferring quantities to lead estimator.
• Performing general subtrade solicitation duties.
• Bid document control.
• Performing bid day assignments.
• Visiting job sites periodically.
• Developing relationships with subcontractors.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Working towards a degree or diploma in civil engineering or a related field.
• Application of various computer software programs will be required, including word processing, spreadsheet applications and drafting.
• Ability to read blueprints.
• Knowledge of a variety of contract arrangements such as: Lump Sum, Design Build, Project Management, Construction Management, and Public/Private Partnership.
• A strong desire to work in a construction environment and prior field construction experience will be considered an asset.
