Environmental Scientist - Toxicology & Risk Assessment
Job Description

The Opportunity:

You will be part of the risk assessment team which is part of the dynamic multi-disciplinary Environmental Management team in BC and Yukon, that supports our diverse clients with their investigation, remediation and risk assessment needs. You will be joining one of the largest risk assessment and toxicologist teams in the BC and Yukon region. Our team has over 20 staff that practice in a range of areas including, but not limited to: human and ecological risk assessment, environmental impact assessments, aquatic effects assessments, specialty toxicology service and environmental monitoring. You will have opportunities to provide input on a wide range of projects that would benefit from your risk assessment, toxicology, biology, or related expertise.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Apply (and develop) expertise in applying toxicology and risk assessment principles to a wide variety of projects including contaminated sites and environmental assessments.
  • Collaborate with senior staff to understand project objectives and how your contribution is being used to move the project forward.
  • Conduct literature searches, extract relevant information, and contribute to written deliverables.
  • Use statistical tools to analyze large data sets and help with data visualization.
  • Construct and apply models for human health and ecological risk calculations.
  • Complete quality control & quality assurance checks on data, calculations, and finished work products.
  • Participate in field programs (water, sediment, soil, biological sampling) in a wide variety of settings around Western Canada.
  • Field work is not the focus of the position, but there is an expectation to collaborate to help deliver projects.

What you'll bring to WSP...

  • Bachelor’s degree in Toxicology, Environmental Science, or other related field of study. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Eligibility for professional registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (College of Applied Biology of British Columbia) or other applicable professional regulatory body.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Good attention to detail and strong written communication skills.
  • Self-starter and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Enthusiasm for on-going learning.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and a clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, technical guidance, and environmental quality guidelines an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in basic software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and knowledge of at least one advanced statistical software package (e.g., R, SPSS, SigmaPlot).
  • Background in terrestrial or aquatic toxicology, human health toxicology, risk assessment, or related discipline an asset.
  • Familiarity with environmental sampling methods an asset.

Salary range: $55,400 - $76,200

The final salary awarded for this role may vary from the above range based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs. The salary range provided in this job posting may be subject to change for business purposes.
