Your impact
Jacobs is currently looking to hire an Environmental Planner with Socio-Economic and Indigenous Engagement Expertise, based out of our Calgary Alberta office. This position offers the opportunity to support complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects while playing a key role in fostering respectful and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and socio-economic matters.
As a member of our Environmental Solutions group, you will bring a combination of environmental planning expertise and cultural awareness to support environmental assessments, permitting, and engagement efforts. You will work collaboratively across project teams to ensure Indigenous perspectives are thoughtfully integrated into project planning and delivery.
Key Responsibilities in This Role
- Lead or support Indigenous engagement efforts throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring culturally appropriate and meaningful dialogue.
- Support environmental planning and permitting work with multi-disciplinary teams for infrastructure projects in Canada.
- Coordinate and provide technical writing for environmental assessments and regulatory filings, including the integration of socio-economic components and Indigenous knowledge and values.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with Indigenous communities, including Elders, knowledge holders, and leadership.
- Collaborate with internal teams and clients to develop engagement strategies that support reconciliation and reflect community priorities.
- Oversee the preparation of environmental management plans that incorporate input from Indigenous partners and reflect regulatory requirements.
- Represent Jacobs in meetings with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and government agencies.
- Support business development and proposal writing with a focus on Indigenous relations and regulatory engagement.

Here's what you'll need
- B.Sc. (required) or M.Sc. (preferred) in a Natural Resources-related field (e.g., biology, ecology, forestry, geography).
- Demonstrated experience in Indigenous engagement, consultation, or collaboration in Canada.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and respectfully about Indigenous perspectives.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities, with experience working on multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a respectful, inclusive approach to engagement with diverse communities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental assessment and regulatory systems in Canada.
Ideally you’ll also have
- Familiarity with legislation including the Impact Assessment Act, BC Environmental Assessment Act, and Alberta Energy Regulator requirements.
- Experience with major infrastructure or energy projects through planning, engagement, and construction.
- Experience with Indigenous-led environmental assessments or collaborative impact assessments.
- An understanding of Indigenous governance systems, legal rights, and historical contexts relevant to Western Canada.
- A passion for reconciliation and a commitment to integrating Indigenous knowledge into environmental planning.
