The Environmental Technology Program (ETP) is a long-standing program of the Nunavut Arctic College (NAC). The mandate of the ETP is to develop environmental practitioners to meet the needs of private and public organizations that operate in Nunavut. Reporting to the Chair, Industry Training, the Technician works alongside the Senior Instructor to support the mandate of the ETP.
The Successful Candidate Will Assist With
- The operation and maintenance of the ETP laboratory and garage facilities, research and field equipment, and vehicles;
- Planning ETP field camps and day excursions;
- Delivering the Small Engine Repair course;
- Enhancing course delivery to include Inuit language, culture, knowledge, history and contemporary practices; and
- Providing technical and logistical support for field and laboratory research projects and studies.
Additional Key Responsibilities Include
- Ensuring that facilities and equipment are in operable and safe working order;
- Ensuring that health and safety regulations are being followed;
- Assisting in field work and program delivery, and ensuring Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is included in the program; and
- Being a point of contact for students requiring additional academic and personal support.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are usually obtained through a technical 2-year diploma or trade relevant to the position and a minimum of 2 years’ related work experience in a relevant field. A minimum 2 years’ experience operating various modes of transportation (i.e. boats and snowmobiles) in remote locations and a minimum 2 years’ experience camping, travelling, and successfully navigating ‘on the land’ is required. Preference will be given to applicants with experience teaching small engine repair in a learning environment, preferably in a cross-cultural setting.
Assets Include
- PAL for non-restricted firearms; firearms proficiency training; WHIMIS; valid Nunavut class 5 driver’s license; Small Vessel Operators Proficiency certificate; Marine Emergency Duties certificate; Wilderness First Aid certification (Wilderness First Responder certification);
- Experience planning, organizing and leading multiday trips on the land using boats, snowmobiles and by foot; and
- Experience fixing and maintaining small engines found in ATV’s, snowmobiles, augers, etc.
This is a position of trust, and a criminal record check/ vulnerable sector check is required.
