The City of Lethbridge, Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC), is accepting applications for the non-permanent (casual) Emergency Communications Specialist position. We are looking for results-oriented team members who demonstrate professionalism and are committed to providing exemplary public service.
WAGE: $33.92 per hour (2020 Rate)
STATUS: Temporary, Casual
HOURS OF WORK:
Casuals will be required to sign up for short notice shift vacancies and will be given a schedule of hours required to work to cover vacancies based on operational needs.
Casual positions will be scheduled to provide coverage for breaks, leaves, absences due to illness, vacations etc.
Hours will vary depending on operational requirements and will require the ability and availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and peak vacation periods.
DUTIES:
As an Emergency Communications Specialist for Lethbridge 9-1-1, you are responsible for processing and dispatching emergency, and non-emergency Police and Fire calls.
You will be required to provide assistance and instruction to callers using established procedures, practices and protocols.
You will be required to use a Computer Aided Dispatch System, and other computer programs, as well as answer and monitor incoming and outgoing radio transmissions.
You will also be required to perform a variety of general support duties related to the 24-hour operations of a Public Safety Communications Centre.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma
You must also have skills in entering and retrieving data, and to type a minimum of 40 words per minute (wpm) is required.
A working knowledge of Hexagon CAD systems and IAED Protocol Software is an asset.
Preference may be given to applicants who are certified with the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch in any discipline.
A working knowledge of geographical locations in Lethbridge and surrounding areas is a strong asset.
You must possess excellent customer service and communication skills; react calmly and decisively and have the ability to prioritize and multitask while handling emergency events.
Prior to commencement of employment, you must have current Standard First Aid & CPR qualifications or a higher equivalent.
Additional requirements:
Applicants must consent to and pass a police security clearance, which will include the voluntary completion and submission of a personal disclosure form (lifestyle questionnaire), criminal and police records check, reference checks, and truth verification through polygraph examination.
Applicants must be at a minimum 1 year clear of any detected or undetected criminal activity to be considered for employment, including the use of any illegal drugs.
Applicants will be required to be available to complete a basic industry related aptitude, hearing, and typing tests as well as a psychological assessment and interview.
During the probationary period:
During training and the 12 month probationary period, you must be available to commit to being available for up to full time hours, for a minimum of 1 year, which includes working shift work, to develop a good working knowledge of 9-1-1 telecommunications and dispatch systems in an emergency services environment.
