Job summary

Day & Ross in Calgary is seeking a Dock Lead Hand to oversee dock operations, ensure safe loading/unloading, and optimize staff scheduling for cost-effective service. You will mentor the team, report incidents, and maintain records, while coordinating with the Operations Manager to keep dockside activities running smoothly.

The role requires TDG and WHMIS certification, plus experience in transportation or operations. A strong team player with attention to deadlines is essential.

Qualifications

  • Education: secondary or higher, or combination of education and experience.
  • TDG and WHMIS certifications required.
  • Experience in transportation or operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safely load and unload cargo and operate dock equipment per policies.
  • Schedule dock staff to meet service and cost goals.
  • Plan vehicle movements and manage claims and incidents.
  • Coach and guide dock workers; report performance issues.
  • Maintain records and assist in training staff.

Job description

As a Dock Lead Hand you will work to ensure service to customers is met, that costs to the company meet goals through the scheduling of dock staff, proper loading and unloading techniques, planning vehicles, and managing claims.

How You'll Help:
  • Operate equipment in keeping with legislation, policies and procedures, ensuring safety and efficiency in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life.
  • Load and unload cargo
  • Promptly report all incidents or accidents to supervisor
  • Ensure proper use of protective gear and safe operation of machinery.
  • Report continuing performance and attendance issues to supervisor
  • Answer questions and coach team members on all dock area processed or equipment operation.
  • Maintain records and documents as required
  • Assist in training workers on equipment operation and company safety policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicate issues to supervision, management and other leads/employees
  • Assist whenever necessary and other duties that may be assigned.
  • Provides basic leadership and guidance to dock workers to ensure safe and efficient handling of cargo.
  • Relays information from the Operations Manager to Dock Workers and keeps the Operations Manager updated with dockside operations.
Your Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of secondary education, with preference of post-secondary education (general stream), or a combination of education and experience.
  • Trained in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • WHMIS certified
  • Previous Transportation or operational experience is preferred, various roles within transportation would be beneficial
  • Computer skills – accuracy, MS products, AS400, web-based programs
  • Demonstrated customer relationship skills
  • Able to work deadlines in a high transactional environment
  • Ability to champion business needs in a collaborative manner to colleagues
  • Results focused
  • English, other languages an asset
  • Able to work with little supervision
