The Opportunity:
Postmedia seeks an experienced print production editor to join the management team of Postmedia Editorial Services. Our Deputy Managing Editor will help oversee the team producing the chain's largest publications and will have a role both in monitoring daily production and planning for future editions. A key duty in this role will be working with staff from the Central Operations Centre to advise on changes to the preliminary setup of publications, ensuring papers are set up with the proper mix of content space for various sections and fit within standards for shared content. We seek a natural leader and outside-the-box thinker who can recognize roadblocks in production and pitch adjustments to workflow to maximize efficiency and productivity. The successful candidate must work collaboratively with colleagues from within PES and other newsrooms to co-ordinate plans for special projects and long-term adjustments to workflow due to new deadlines or other company requirements.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Extensive experience in newspaper production, including time as a senior copy editor.
  • Experience with pagination using Adobe InDesign and an understanding of workflow management using the Naviga content management system is an asset.
  • Experience with publication planning, including an understanding of press requirements on sizing and colour positioning.
  • Work experience in a role related to centralized production, considering multiple publications using shared content and with different requirements/restrictions for deadlines and presses, is an asset.
  • Experience with planning content schedules, including tracking stories to avoid duplication in print.
  • Ability to maintain overview of big-picture production concerns while being focused on individual tasks.

Duties:

  • Assist with overseeing daily production for PES's core publications and centrally produced work for the chain.
  • Adapt daily duties to incorporate other production oversight roles in the absence of other PES managers.
  • Take lead role on daily checks of preliminary layouts for the core PES publications and work with members of the Central Operations Centre to adjust ad placement and paper size to optimize space for content and production requirements.
  • Work with Editor-in-Chief and other members of the PES management team to take a big-picture view of PES’s operations and role within the company and consider strategies for adapting operations to meet the company’s changing needs and goals.
  • Work with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor to make long-term changes to the structure of papers to adjust for changes in production requirements and deadlines.
  • Provide production support/backup to PES teams including the central arts-life desk .
