The Controls Engineer is a highly motivated and technically skilled professional responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing control systems to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of production equipment and processes. This role involves expertise in PLC programming, HMI development, industrial automation technologies, and integration of new products. The Controls Engineer will provide technical leadership and collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance manufacturing processes, troubleshoot system issues, and ensure compliance with safety and industry standards.

Accountabilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement complex control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and industrial networks, to support automotive manufacturing processes.
  • Define control system requirements, develop functional specifications, and design system architectures for scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Program and configure control systems using Siemens S7, TIA Portal, and Simotion to optimize performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct testing and validation of control systems through simulation, emulation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex control system issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate control systems with production equipment, robotics, vision systems, and other automation technologies.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to colleagues, fostering knowledge sharing and skill development in controls engineering.
  • Conduct electrical feasibility studies for new equipment and lead the integration of new products on existing production lines.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations (CSA, UL, IEC, etc.), participating in PSHSR reviews for equipment safety validation.
  • Support the execution of factory automation, MES, and IoT projects to enhance production capabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years in a controls engineering or relevant role.
  • Expertise in PLC programming languages, including Siemens S7, TIA Portal, and Simotion.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, ladder diagrams, and structured control text programs.
  • Experience integrating automation technologies, including factory automation systems and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex system issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, influence colleagues, and provide technical guidance.
