Job Description

Scope:

Under general supervision, the Controls Engineer assists in the design, testing, and configuration of control programs for the industrial automation of various manufacturing processes aimed at improving safety, quality, delivery, and productivity. The candidate will read and understand electronic and electrical schematics, document programs, and conduct functional and operational tests to verify system performance and troubleshoot issues.

Will work cross functionally with a team of Automation Engineers as well as Maintenance, Electrical, and Mechanical Technicians to assemble, test, commission, and support production equipment both on company and customer sites.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Create schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and control panel hardware design.
  2. Create BOM’s of required electrical and controls devices for a fully functioning system.
  3. Write and debug Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) code in accordance with programmer work instructions or customer requirements.
  4. Perform corrective maintenance, non-routine repair, modification, troubleshooting, calibration, of PLC/HMI code and/or system components.
  5. Commission Industrial Networks and establish stable communication between PLCs and their network components, switches, and ancillary devices.
  6. Check function of all switches on cylinders, actuators, and other devices to verify functionality.
  7. Confirm sequence and operation of machines prior to programming with mechanical technician or engineering.
  8. Utilize various schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and other resources.
  9. Maintain records of work performed; assist in providing content for machine manuals and similar documentation for the installation, maintenance, calibrating, removal and modification of electronic systems and equipment.
  10. Perform field service work as required for installation, modification, and service of systems.
  11. Advise and assist Team Leads, management, and others on operating problems involving automation systems and provide suggested remedies.
  12. Ability and willingness to travel extensively including overnight stays primarily within the U.S.
  13. Ability to work extended shift durations including non-day shift and/or weekend assignments.
  14. Robot Programming and troubleshooting is a plus.

Additional Information

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a controls related field (Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or equivalent) preferred.
  2. Three to seven years’ experience in PLC and HMI programming and configuration along with troubleshooting and solving software/hardware issues in a manufacturing environment.
  3. Ability to technically lead / supervise up to 2 associate technicians.

Responsibilities for Health, Safety and Environment include:

  1. Work in compliance with divisional health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  2. Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods.
  3. Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
  4. Report defect in any equipment or protective device.
  5. Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for the assigned tasks.
  6. Attend all required health, safety, and environmental training.
  7. Report any accidents/incidents to supervisor.
  8. Assist in investigating accidents/incidents.
  9. Refrain from engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running, or rough and boisterous conduct.
