Accountabilities
Job Description:
Community Relations
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city councillors, local community leaders, organizations, groups, residents and other community members.
  • Participate in local community planning initiatives and represent the shelter on related committees or groups in the city.
  • Work proactively and inclusively with stakeholders to support productive community relations between residents and the respite centre.
  • Respond to community concerns promptly and respectfully, respecting clients' privacy rights.
  • Represent the shelter at community tables, ensuring all voices are heard.
  • Act as a community resource for conflict resolution, mediation, facilitation, and building community relationships.
  • Develop a volunteer program for the shelter.
  • Develop a student placement program to support staff and clients.
  • Perform on call duties as scheduled.
Program
  • Conduct research to identify support and programming needs of clients.
  • Develop a work plan to engage community and faith groups and local social services in delivering relevant programs.
  • Build partnerships with social service providers to enhance programs and services.
  • Secure facilitators for workshops on topics like stress management, budgeting, nutrition, etc.
  • Coordinate with community service providers and internal teams for effective service delivery.
  • Facilitate access to housing supports and mental health services through partnerships.
  • Support employment readiness programs, including resume writing and training needs assessment.
Health and Safety

Assist in ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements specific to the shelter, including workplace inspections, safety talks, incident investigations, and employee training.

Organizational Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the values and policies of The Salvation Army.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training.
  • Engage in supervision and performance evaluations.
  • Follow policies and procedures manuals and standards.
  • Make suggestions for improving efficiency and procedures.
  • Represent the organization professionally.
Critical Relationship Management

Perform other related duties as required.

Internal & External Relationships
  • Internal: Front Line Workers, management, staff, volunteers.
  • External: Community stakeholders, city councilors, clients, community members.
Leadership & Working Conditions
  • Reports to: Director
  • Direct reports: Volunteers
  • Work hours: Full-time, generally Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, with some evenings/weekends.
  • Work environment: Shelter locations with generally agreeable conditions.
Qualifications
  • Minimum two-year diploma in Human Services or related field; degree preferred.
  • Certifications: First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention, Conflict Resolution.
  • Experience: 1-3 years in homeless or community development sector.
  • Skills: Research, communication, facilitation, confidentiality, proficiency in MS Office, ability to develop community partnerships.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record preferred.
Compensation

Range: $55,693.49 to $83,540.23, based on experience and qualifications. Reasonable accommodations available upon request.
