This is an opportunity to lead a field engineering team, assisting customers with implementing Canonical's open source solutions across public clouds and data centers. The role involves working with technologies like Ubuntu, virtualization, private cloud, Kubernetes, MLops platforms, data platforms, and more. As Canonical expands into industries such as telco, finance, healthcare, and media, new open source solutions are developed to meet these needs.

We believe Engineering Managers should be excellent engineers, comfortable troubleshooting and engaging in technical presales. They should contribute technically but focus more on guiding their teams' direction, focus, and delivery. We also focus on developing management skills and soft skills in engineers interested in management roles.

Our goal is to make open source more accessible, reliable, and secure, aiming to provide 'most software to most companies'. We select engineers globally based on brilliance and motivation, and our managers help teams achieve their potential and take pride in their work.

The role of a Cloud Field Engineering Manager at Canonical

The team of cloud solutions architects works directly with customers to design private and public cloud solutions tailored to workload needs. Technologies include Openstack, MicroCloud, Ceph, Kubernetes, Kubeflow, Spark, PostgreSQL, among others. The team deploys, tests, and hands over solutions, and participates in presales to advise during sales processes.

The manager oversees line management and career development, represents the team technically, drives collaboration, and participates in presales to meet quarterly goals.

Location:

This role is home-based, managing a team in your time zone.

Typical day:

1. Lead and develop a team of Field engineers in Presales and Professional Services
2. Solve customer problems by promoting technologies and acting as a trusted advisor
3. Work remotely within a single major time zone
4. Coach, mentor, and provide career feedback
5. Monitor team health indicators
6. Implement disciplined engineering processes
7. Represent your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
8. Develop and promote engineering and organizational best practices
9. Plan and track progress on goals and projects
10. Participate in leadership collaboration

Qualifications:

• Knowledge of cloud computing technologies (Kubernetes, Openstack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph)
• Practical Linux and networking skills
• Experience in technical presales
• Dynamic, proactive, and people-oriented personality
• Excellent English communication skills
• Passion for developing and mentoring people
• Leadership, coaching, and mentoring experience
• Organized with a focus on delivering high-quality results
• Strong academic background
• Willingness to travel up to 40%

Additional skills:

• Spanish or French language skills (preferred)
• Python knowledge
• Experience working with external partners
