SSA Marine Canada Ltd. is seeking a permanent Claim Coordinator to join our Risk Management team in Montreal. This full-time role reports to SSA Marine in Vancouver and the United States, offering a stable career in a diversified marine logistics group.

The position investigates and administers general liability claims, reviews incident reports, and communicates with claimants, terminals and lines to determine obligations. A degree is required, with 2–4 years of claims experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree required; prior claims handling may substitute.

• Strong computer skills and professional business writing.

Responsibilities

• Reviews incident reports and establishes compensability/coverage positions.
• Guides claims assistants on entry of claims and filing documents.
• Contacts claimants, terminals, shipping lines to obtain information.
• Attends scene for serious incidents to assist onsite investigation.
• Investigates questionable/suspicious claims in detail.
• Estimates loss reserves based on claim analysis.
• Directs correspondence with claimants, attorneys, and others.
• May engage marine surveyors or independent investigators.

SSA Marine is seeking a permanent Claim Coordinator to join our Risk management team. This full-time, permanent position is based at our office in Montreal and reports to the SSA Marine in Vancouver and United States.

The Position

The Claims Coordinator is responsible for investigating and administering general liability claims by reviewing incident reports and communicating with various parties to determine the extent of the company's legal obligations. Be available 24/7 to respond to serious accidents.

You will be part of a motivated and diverse team and will have a high degree of interaction with all employees throughout the organization.

Responsibilities & Activities

• Reviews initial report of incident and establishes possible compensability/coverage positions, including possible subrogation actions based upon information available.
• Provides guidance to claims assistants regarding entry of claims into the local system and filing of claim documents.
• Contacts and communicates with claimants, terminal employees, shipping lines, etc. to obtain additional information regarding the incident and determine liability.
• For serious incidents, attend scene ASAP to assist in the onsite investigation.
• Detailed investigation of ALL questionable/suspicious claims.
• Establishes loss reserve estimates based on analysis of the claim event.
• Directs correspondence and communication with claimants, terminals, shipping lines, attorneys, etc. as appropriate.
• Receives guidance from Claims Director on complex and unique claims issues.
• Reviews invoices and processing or disputes according to evaluation of claim.
• May engage and direct marine surveyors or other independent investigators if appropriate.
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills

The successful candidate will have strong business acumen and attention to detail. You will have the necessary communication skills to converse easily with all members of the organization. You are analytical, a problem solver and critical thinker with attention to detail. The qualifications and skills to be successful in this position include:

• Undergraduate Degree is required, however previous claims handling experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
• 2-4 years of previous claims handling experience is required.
• Must have understanding SSA Marine’s claims handling philosophy. Aggressive but fair “hands-on” proactive approach.
• Computer skills with a high degree of proficiency.
• Business writing skills. You must be able to communicate with claimant, insurance adjusters, terminal personnel, management, surveyors, attorneys and various other parties involved in the claim process in a professional and proper manner.
