Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Childcare Supervisor serves as the key leader of the Childcare Centre, dedicated to ensuring the delivery of exceptional care and education to children and families. This role requires strict adherence to the Ministry of Education’s Child Care and Early Years regulations, Peel Region standards, and The Salvation Army's policies and procedures. The Supervisor is responsible for hiring, supporting, coaching, and monitoring staff to cultivate a positive and productive work environment. Additionally, the Supervisor manages the operating budget to maintain fiscal responsibility, ensuring the center’s financial health. A critical aspect of this role is ensuring that staff effectively implement the Program Statement, aligning with The Salvation Army mission and values and ‘How Does Learning Happen’ guidelines. Furthermore, the Supervisor fosters a collaborative and integrative relationship with the Church and Family Services, strengthening community connections and support. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, a commitment to high standards of quality childcare, and the ability to manage both people and finances effectively.
Key Accountabilities
Incumbent will perform all, some or similar range of duties as below:
Childcare Responsibilities
- Assists in the delivery of programs according to relevant government and Salvation Army requirements, develops relevant policies and procedures (including behavior modification plans and practices) and ensures staff compliance.
- Supervises Centre staff, including input into performance reviews, oversees orientation of student on placement and volunteers, preparing their timetable and work schedules and appraising their performance.
- Assists in planning and implementing appropriate aged-based activities according to skill and learning levels that promote social interaction and personal development.
- May market and recruit new participants, conduct intake interviews and orientate new participants and families; provides on-going feedback on a child’s development and behavior.
- May network with other childcares, schools, community centres, churches and social services agencies for the benefit of the children and the program.
- Assists with effective risk management; monitors food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies, facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid and completes, reports and files incident reports as required.
- Ensures that all information about children, family, staff, visitors and volunteers are strictly confidential; and that activity records and statistics are confidentially secured.
- Works with the Director to ensure that programs meet contractual, legal and internal accreditation requirements; ensures full compliance with child protection legislation and intervenes when necessary.
- Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes supporting growth and promoting change for the child and family.
- Remains current in practice through participation in upgrading courses, workshops, etc.
- May provide transportation to/from school or field trip sites.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Guide, coach and mentor educators to implement a relationship focused, play based, emergent program that is developmentally appropriate.
- Ensure the CCEYA is adhered to and How Does Learning Happen implemented.
- Support educators to embed biblical stories and the Salvation Army’s mission and core values in the daily program.
- Plan monthly staff meetings.
- Post, interview and hire educators.
- Conduct annual PEAC performance reviews and Program Statement monitoring.
Critical Relationship Management
Governance Boards and Councils: None.
Internal: Staff members, volunteers, children in the program.
External: Parents and guardians of the children, Ministry of Education, Local Public Health departments, City of Toronto or Region of Peel agencies.
Managerial Responsibility
- Reports directly to Executive Director of Childcare Services.
- Direct reports: Childcare staff members.
- The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader: for providing direction and checking results but generally works along with those supervised.
Financial And Materials Management
- The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly or has responsibility for the wise use of own resources.
- Participate in developing the annual budget, review and maintain the monthly budget.
- Accurately submit weekly payroll information and approve staff expenses.
- Submit invoices in a timely manner.
- Purchase developmentally appropriate furnishings, equipment and materials according to the budget allocation and other available funding.
- Collect parent fees and reconcile municipal funding for parent fees.
- Adhere to all The Salvation Army’s financial policies and procedures.
- The incumbent may be authorized.
- The incumbent has an input in informing the annual budget.
- The incumbent reviews and maintain the monthly budget.
Working Conditions
- The performance of the job requires frequently lifting/moving equipment and children, room set-up, moderate amount of teaching, leading etc.
- Occasional computer work.
- Possibility of intervening in physical confrontations.
- Cleaning the facility and putting up wall displays.
- The incumbent is required to lift up to 30 pounds with no assistance from others.
- Shifts and outside work.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
- Verbal Abuse.
- Tantrums.
- Noise.
- The incumbent may have little to no travel required.
- Must sign to acknowledge you have received, read and understand the following, if applicable for the province:

- Provincial Early Childhood Services Act and Regulations.
- Provincial Operator Manual for Full-time and Part-time Early Learning and Childcare Centres.
- The Child Victims of Abuse Protocols of the Province.

Education And Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college Diploma program of two academic years in Early Childhood Education, from a recognized institution or equivalent.
- Must maintain a current, valid First Aid & C.P.R. Certificate.
- Must complete the mandatory provincial curriculum training and hold certification required by the province.
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- A minimum of two years of experience as RECE in a licensed childcare r
- Two years related management experience is an asset.
- Knowledge and experience in supervising and implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.
Skills And Capabilities
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
- Review of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required (no more than 3 years old).
- Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols.
- The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training must be completed immediately upon hiring.
- Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
- Must have a workable concept of childcare centres.
- Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
- Ability to communicate in kind, peaceful manner.
- Ability to stay calm and patient.
- Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to conduct self professionally and follow policies and procedures and use code of ethics to guide practice.

Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $26.78 to $33.47 with a maximum of $40.16.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
