Role Description
The CFO, a member of the leadership team reporting to the President, provides strategic leadership and oversight across all key elements of finance, operations and compliance in our purpose-driven firm.
Primary Duties
- Provide strategic financial leadership aligned with our mission, vision and long-term goals
- Lead all aspects of finance, operations and compliance for our growing, independent portfolio management firm, subsidiaries and funds
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and analysis to support strategic decision-making and organizational growth
- Partner with other senior leaders on capital structure, fundraising, investor reporting and Board governance
- Develop and implement financial policies, internal controls and risk management frameworks, ensuring regulatory and industry compliance
- Manage and mentor a high-performing finance team – Accountant, Operations Manager, Senior Portfolio Administrator and Portfolio Administrator, fostering operational excellence and continuous improvement
- Enhance workflows, processes and systems to optimize efficiency and support cost-effective, tech-enabled operations
- Manage relationships with key service providers and vendors that support the day-to-day operations of the finance, operations and compliance functions
Finance
- Lead our strategic financial planning, including annual budgeting, ongoing financial analysis and review of financial performance
- Lead our annual financial audit, including liaising with the auditor and coordinating and preparing audit material
- Lead on reporting financial information to key stakeholders, including government departments and fund LPs, on a periodic basis
- Oversee all portfolio admin, middle and back office, and fund operations
- Manage and oversee all aspects of our day-to-day finance needs including payroll, invoicing, monthly P&L, account reconciliation, treasury and cash management, internal and external reporting, intercompany billing, vendor management and corporate and regulatory filings
Operations
- Lead on all operational areas of our growing business, including management of related entities and joint ventures
- Lead and provide strategic guidance on our investment operations function, including our ability to operate public and private funds and managed accounts in an efficient, scalable, secure and technology-enabled manner
- Lead and provide strategic guidance on key business operations functions including IT, administration and implementation of technology systems
Compliance
- Working with our CCO and external counsel, lead and manage all aspects of our compliance program including the compliance oversight program, regulatory reporting, conflicts of interest and other functions related to a registered Portfolio Manager and Exempt Market Dealer
Qualifications
On your resume, demonstrate the following:
- At least 10 years of relevant work experience
- A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, active and in good standing
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including IFRS and ASPE
- Familiarity with online cash management systems and accounting software
- Operational excellence, having improved workflows, processes documentation and communication
- Experience dealing with securities regulatory bodies, government agencies and Boards of Directors
- Experience leading and building finance and operations functions in a relevant industry
- Experience working with a small, dynamic team
- Technology literacy: experience working with modern, cloud-based digital systems, SaaS and fully digitized processes
- Experience at an independent portfolio management firm or in the asset management industry would be a strong asset
- Experience working in impact investing and/or private investing would be an asset
- Proficiency in both English and French would be an asset
- Legally able to work in Canada without restriction
