  • Ability to interpret design drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of building construction, systems, and asset lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Link maintenance history and preventative maintenance insights to capital planning.
  • Identify infrastructure issues to move from reactive to planned renewal.
  • Support planning, sequencing, and readiness for planned projects.
  • Advise on in-house vs external contracting based on complexity and timing.
  • Ensure maintenance priorities inform project timing decisions.
  • Provide leadership to a team of project management staff within a district/hub model.
  • Create a positive, respectful, and accountable workplace culture focused on service excellence.
  • Conduct performance management activities including goal setting, performance reviews, and feedback.
  • Promote safe work practices and ensure adherence to safety standards.
  • Support staff in managing complex building projects by partnering with internal and external resources.

Building Projects Lead
Metropolitan District

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Building Projects Lead who is a strong people leader and operational manager to guide a team and direct the delivery and coordination of major construction projects. This role is ideal for a leader who can balance operational excellence, leadership, and a commitment to service for tenants and applicants.

The Building Projects Lead is the district-level liaison to support implementation of the centrally governed capital plan, ensuring district projects are scoped, coordinated, and delivered in alignment with the organization's capital priorities, standards, and technical direction. The role supports project execution by coordinating with the central technical team, Procurement, and external partners. The Lead ensures district needs, constraints, and operational realities inform the design process.

The Building Projects Lead reports to the District Director and connects district to corporate through the Infrastructure Steering Committee, the primary vehicle to ensure collaboration across the organization as a forum for prioritization, delivery-method decisions, escalation, and progress reporting.

Qualifications
Must Have
  • Post-secondary education and extensive experience in a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Significant experience leading teams responsible for capital project delivery, facilities management, maintenance operations, infrastructure renewal, or related functions.
  • Experience overseeing building construction, renovation, modernization, or infrastructure renewal projects within occupied facilities, using asset condition information, maintenance history, and operational requirements to inform capital planning and project prioritization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable building codes, occupational health and safety legislation, and project management technical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing capital and operating budgets and supporting project and investment decisions.
  • Experience supervising unionized staff and working within a collective agreement environment.
  • Ability to interpret design drawings, technical specifications, and project documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of building construction, building systems, maintenance practices, and asset lifecycle management.
The Fine Print

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered.

This position requires a valid driver's license and use of a work vehicle. Travel within HRM County is required.

Responsibilities
  • Linking maintenance history, recurring failures, and preventative maintenance insights to the capital planning process.
  • Identifying infrastructure issues that should move from reactive maintenance into planned renewal, recapitalization, or modernization scopes.
  • Supporting planning, sequencing, and operational readiness requirements for planned projects.
  • Advising on which work is practical for in-house execution versus external contracting based on complexity, timing, and capacity.
  • Ensuring maintenance priorities and field intelligence are reflected in asset planning and project timing decisions.
  • Provide strong leadership to a team of project management staff within a district/hub model.

  • Salary: $3,383.69 - $4,398.80 biweekly (MC22)
  • Schedule: 35-hour work week
