Job summary

The Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency is seeking a Maintenance Technician - Carpenter for the Northern District. Based in Guysborough/Canso, the role covers carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting and ventilation under the Agency's auspices.

This full-time, permanent position requires a trade certification (Red Seal Journeyperson or provincial) and at least three years in building and property maintenance, plus a valid driver's license for regular Northern District travel.

Qualifications

  • Trade certification with 3 years of building/property maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of maintenance procedures, codes and safety regulations.
  • Verbal and written communication with tenants, staff and contractors.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out preventative maintenance on buildings, systems and equipment.
  • Prepare work orders, vehicle reports and maintenance logs.
  • Monitor contractors engaged for maintenance contracts.
  • Recommend materials and equipment replacements.
  • Install, repair and maintain building systems and plumbing and carpentry elements.
  • Inspect and repair water treatment, piping, fixtures and finish carpentry components.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for carrying out material and equipment installations, renovations, repairs and servicing in the following areas - carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting, and ventilation under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency

Qualifications
Must Have
  • Certificate of qualification under the Apprenticeship and Tradesman's Qualifications Act of the Province of Nova Scotia or interprovincial certification (Red Seal Journeyperson certification), plus three years of experience in building and property maintenance.
  • Knowledge of planned maintenance procedures as well as an awareness of building codes, municipal by laws, Provincial Acts and Regulations such as Workers' Compensation Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and appropriate fire regulations.
  • Communication skills, both verbal and written and interpersonal skills, are required in dealing with tenants, staff and contractors.
  • Possess competencies in computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
Nice to have:
  • Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.

This position requires a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. Regular travel within Northern District is required.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out preventative maintenance to all buildings, appliances, fixtures, utilities, and equipment in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
  • Monitor contractors engaged to carry out maintenance contracts.
  • Provide recommendations regarding the replacement and acquisition of materials and equipment.
  • Install, repair and maintain buildings systems and components.
  • Install, repair and maintain any of the following: water treatment equipment, piping, controls, underground storm sanitary and water piping systems, sinks, tubs, toilets, water heaters and/or conditioners, plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim.
  • Install, maintain and repair the following finished carpentry components: door jambs, doors, exterior facias, soffits, railings and wood trim, counters, cupboards, shelving, windows, glass and screening.
  • Install and maintain waterproofing, damp-proofing, caulking, thermal insulation and vapour barriers, weather stripping and sound insulation
  • Other assigned duties.
