The purpose of this position is to be part of a team that provides quality public library services supporting the educational, recreation and informational needs of the public. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Abrams Village Library of the PEI Public Library Service. As well as provision of front-line customer service (circulation, and programming) the incumbent is required to promote the library in the community and maintain positive working relationships with local Town councils, community groups, and Library Committees/Friends of the Library groups.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Opening and closing of library following set procedures;
  • Check in and check out of library materials using library software, emptying book drop, and filling holds;
  • Registering new patrons and updating patron account information;
  • Renewing items and placing holds in person, via phone, via email;
  • Daily balance of cash and monthly deposits;
  • Implementing and explaining library policies and resolving issues with patrons regarding library procedures & policies, fees, materials, lost or overdue items, etc.;
  • Assisting patrons to find library materials (print and electronic) through reader’s advisory, online searches and interlibrary loan requests;
  • Assisting patrons with accessing and using Wi-Fi, public computers, and printers and providing basic problem solving for technological/computer problems (public and staff);
  • Instructing patrons using the library website, online catalogue, and online resources (e-books and audiobooks);
  • Shelving, shelf reading, and straightening library materials and keeping the library tidy, appealing & welcoming;
  • Creating engaging in-house displays in order to promote the library’s collections;
  • Scheduling, preparing, promoting, and delivering programs for children and adults;
  • Creating posters and other promotional materials for programs;
  • Coordinating with community groups and individuals when offering partnered programming, or other services;
  • Maintaining positive working relationships with Town Council and reporting facility issues;
  • Delivering annual reports, public presentations and other public programming within the community;
  • May be required to work at other library locations; and
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade 12, plus some university courses, or library technician courses or relevant college diploma.
  • Recent library experience preferred.
  • Must be fluently bilingual by demonstrating competency with oral and written skills in both French and English.
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
  • Excellent and current computer skills and knowledge of basic software applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic and able to provide quality customer service.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and as part of a provincial team.
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing 30-40 pounds, push 200-pound book carts, stand for long periods of time and carry materials for shelving.
  • Good previous work and attendance record and be able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
