Hastings District Council is seeking a practical Animal Control Officer to join our team in Hastings, NZ. You will respond to animal control concerns, promote responsible dog ownership, and support pound operations across the district.

The role requires calm judgement, strong communication, and the ability to apply dog control legislation fairly in diverse situations. You will engage with the public to achieve safe, practical outcomes.

Qualifications

Description du poste

We are looking for a practical and resilient Animal Control Officer to join our team. This is a varied, hands‑on role where no two days are the same. You will help promote responsible dog ownership, respond to animal control concerns, educate schools and community groups, support the operation of our pound facilities, and apply the Dog Control Act and relevant Council bylaws.

You will be out in the community helping to resolve issues, improve public safety and achieve fair, practical outcomes for everyone involved. At times, you will need to manage difficult or confrontational situations, so sound judgement, professionalism and the ability to communicate respectfully under pressure are essential.

• Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills
• A calm, confident and professional approach in challenging situations
• The ability to assess information, investigate concerns and make sound decisions
• Confidence handling dogs, including aggressive dogs, and stock
• The ability to interpret and apply legislation consistently and fairly
• A practical, solutions-focused approach and the ability to think on your feet
• Confidence using Microsoft Office and other computer systems
• A full, clean New Zealand driver licence
