Job summary

Desjardins, a national leader in commercial insurance, seeks a Corporate Underwriting Advisor to shape underwriting strategy and drive profitable growth across our national portfolio. You will influence appetite, risk selection, and product development while partnering with actuaries and distribution teams.

You will analyze market trends, identify gaps, and translate client needs into innovative insurance solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Insurance, or a related field.
  • CIP designation completed or in current progress.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, underwriting principles, risk selection, and portfolio segmentation.
  • Experience drafting coverage wordings, interpreting coverage intent, determining eligibility, and developing underwriting guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Shape Underwriting Strategy and Portfolio Performance.
  • Contribute to the evolution of underwriting appetite, eligibility criteria, and risk selection frameworks.
  • Analyze portfolio performance, market trends, and emerging risks to identify opportunities for profitable growth.
  • Identify product and coverage gaps in our current portfolio using loss data, client feedback, and competitive insights to expand our risk appetite.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to our division, providing expert guidance on complex underwriting issues, high-impact risks, and portfolio initiatives.
  • Drive Product Development and Innovation by designing, enhancing, and maintaining Commercial insurance products, coverages, and endorsements.
  • Translate client needs into innovative insurance solutions that strengthen our competitive position.
  • Ensure products remain relevant, sustainable, and aligned with evolving business objectives.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives that transform underwriting capabilities, processes, and tools.
  • Support the implementation of future-focused underwriting practices, data-driven decision-making, and emerging technologies.

Join a national team that is shaping the future of Commercial insurance. As a Corporate Underwriting Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in defining underwriting strategies, evolving commercial insurance products, and driving profitable growth across our national portfolio. More specifically, you will be responsible to:

  • Shape Underwriting Strategy and Portfolio Performance

  • Contribute to the evolution of underwriting appetite, eligibility criteria, and risk selection frameworks

  • Analyze portfolio performance, market trends, and emerging risks to identify opportunities for profitable growth

  • Identify product and coverage gaps in our current portfolio using loss data, client feedback, and competitive insights to expand our risk appetite

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to our division (actuary/distribution operational partners), providing expert guidance on complex underwriting issues, high-impact risks, and portfolio initiatives

  • Ensure initiatives, queries, file exceptions or positionings, timelines, and recommendations are reviewed with the member/client impact in mind

  • Drive Product Development and Innovation

  • Design, enhance, and maintain Commercial insurance products, coverages, and endorsements

  • Translate client needs into innovative insurance solutions that strengthen our competitive position

  • Ensure products remain relevant, sustainable, and aligned with evolving business objectives

  • Contribute to strategic initiatives that transform underwriting capabilities, processes, and tools

  • Support the implementation of future-focused underwriting practices, data-driven decision-making, and emerging technologies

What you bring to the table

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Insurance, or a related field

  • A minimum of six years of commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience within the Ontario, Atlantic, and/or Western Canadian markets

  • Please note that other combinations of qualifications and relevant experience may be considered

  • Experience drafting coverage wordings, interpreting coverage intent, determining eligibility, and developing underwriting guidelines

  • Advanced experience in product development, underwriting strategy, portfolio management, or business transformation

  • CIP designation completed or in current progress

  • Advanced proficiency of French and English, both oral and written due to the nature of the role and interactions with English-speaking partners, clients, and business stakeholders

  • Advanced knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, underwriting principles, risk selection, and portfolio segmentation
