Job summary

The Victim Services Caseworker provides crisis response, emotional support and practical assistance to victims and witnesses of crime or trauma in the community.

Responsibilities include collaborating with RCMP and community partners, performing safety assessments, guiding clients through court processes and coordinating referrals to services, housing and income assistance. This part-time role requires confidentiality and on-call availability.

Qualifications

• Must be able to meet and maintain RCMP Security Clearance status.
• Knowledge of Police Database systems preferred.
• Working knowledge of Criminal Justice System.
• Working knowledge of social services resources and issues including: Grief support and trauma reactions, mental illness, abuse, suicide intervention, etc.

• Educate clients about court processes, court orientation, attendance, outcomes, and no contact orders.
• Conduct safety and suicide risk assessments and offer crisis debriefings.
• Assist clients with forms and referrals to housing, income assistance and other services.
• Maintain accurate records and report statistics to the Ministry and RDCO.
• Promote Victim Services through community involvement and educational events.
• Create and present information to community groups and participate in research as applicable.
• On-call emergency availability for police call-outs (24/7).
• Continuing education and training to enhance trauma response knowledge.

Job description

The primary purpose of the Victim Services Caseworker position is to respond to crisis, provide emotional support, practical assistance and information to victims and witnesses of crime and/or trauma.

Responsibilities

1.Provide information, practical assistance and emotional support to victims and witnesses of crime and trauma.Work in partnership with Community-based Victim Services, basic needs community resources and emergency supports to assist clients.

2.Accept referrals from RCMP, general public and community colleagues with a quick response time for initial client contact.

3.Liaise with Criminal Justice partners including RCMP, Specialized Domestic Violence Unit, Coroner’s Office, Crown Counsel and Crime Prevention to assist and support victims of crime

4.Assist RCMP on serious crime, homicide files and regularly consult to ensure, for example, information disclosed to victims/family does not negatively impact investigation.

5.Maintain client confidentiality with the disclaimer of the requirement to report specific crime events to RCMP (child abuse, domestic violence and harm to self/others).

6.Be educated on the Criminal Justice System to offer clients involved access to court support (including providing information on court process, court orientation, court attendance, court outcomes, and explanation of no contact orders and the administration of the offender’s sentence).

7.Conduct safety and suicide risk assessments for people impacted by abuse, trauma and loss as well as help guide safety planning.Offer Critical Incident debriefings to groups and individuals impacted by a traumatic event.

8.Assist clients with forms such as Victim Impact Statement, Crime Victim Assistance Program, supportive housing, income assistance and other relevant referrals.

9.Maintain accurate records and other administrative duties, including accessing information from RCMP, maintain Victim Services (VSIS) files, collect statistics for Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General and reports to RDCO.

10.Promote Victim Services through active community involvement, including participation in community committees, focus groups, and educational events.Develop and provide program brochures and other applicable materials to community and clients.

11.Create, present/educate community groups and general public on relevant subject matter and, participate in research initiatives when applicable.

12.On-call emergency availability for Police call-outs (providing stand-by services 24 hours, 7 days per week).

13.Continuing education and training to further develop knowledge-base in trauma response, grief/loss, etc.

14. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Training and Experience Required:

• Degree in a related field.
• Minimum 1 year working with victims or crime or trauma.
• Valid BC Driver’s License with Record of Safe Driving.

Work Conditions

Physical Effort: Mainly office environment. Brief light/moderate lifting of boxes, office supplies.

Physical Environment: Primarily an office environment; also have client contacts in community andduring police call out to varied environments such as roadside, hospital, people’s homes and public spaces (with exposure to all weather conditions).

Mental Stress: Regular exposure to complex social and mental conditions including serious trauma, scene/visual observation or deaths by suicide, overdose, accidents and violent crimes.

Additional Information

This is a part time, CUPE 338 position that works 28-hours per week. The schedule for this position is Tuesday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with an additional paid, on-call rotation. Schedule flexibility may be required to meet operational demands. This job opening closes on the evening of Thursday, October 8, 2026.
