Job summary

Life’s Journey Inc. in Brandon, MB is seeking an Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor (Casual, 6 Months) to provide direct support in the warming shelter and to collaborate with the Shelter Care Team.

The role emphasizes compassionate guidance, crisis response, and adherence to safety policies. You will work 7:30pm–7:30am, with potential shift-related premium for overnight coverage, and must complete required clearances and training.

Qualifications

  • Satisfactory Child and Adult Abuse Registry check and satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
  • First Aid Level 1 – Emergency & CPR certification.
  • Demonstrated language, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • Ability to attend work regularly as scheduled.
  • Ability to establish professional relationships and boundaries.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction practices and ability to work within a harm reduction framework.
  • Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and seek collaborative opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to participants accessing the warming shelter.
  • Build a friendly, supportive relationship with participants in a positive manner.
  • Provide direct support during meetings with collateral agencies as an agency representative in a professional manner.
  • Assist the participants during times of crisis and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ensure adequate direct supervision in identified risk areas per support plans.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to on-duty cellular phone and panic button.
  • Complete general housekeeping duties, such as cleaning floors, bathrooms, and waste disposal.
  • Ensure participants take all their personal belongings upon exit from the shelter.
  • Attend employee meetings to review performance and development.
  • Attend training sessions as requested.
  • Communicate and report to the Shelter Care Team on developments or incidents.
  • Provide timely verbal and/or written reports of any unusual occurrences or incidents to the Clinical Case Manager or designate.
  • Provide an appropriate role model with newer staff to ensure proper procedures and program plans are adhered to.
  • Provide accurate documentation of Daily shift occurrences.
  • Communicate with colleagues using the staff communication log.
  • Submit an accurate record of shifts worked on Payworks Web Time Log In.
  • Ensure the safety and security of all individuals by monitoring and enforcing safety measures.
  • Be aware of Workplace Safety and Health Policies and report concerns.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Note: Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor assigned to be the Primary Staff on each shift will receive an additional $1.50/hr. Premium

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: PROGRAM MANAGER

The OvernightDrop-In Support Mentor is responsible for the ongoing direct support of theparticipants of the Overnight Warming Shelter Drop-in; ensuring all programrequirements are consistently being met. This includes participating in theongoing planning, monitoring, and communication of activities of the programparticipants. The OvernightDrop-In Support Mentor must also demonstrate effective guidance and disciplinetechniques continuously. The Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor is expected tofollow the Personnel Policies, including Workplace Health and Safety Policies, OperationalPractices, and the goals of Life’s Journey Inc. in completing their duties.

This positionworks collaboratively with other members of the Participant Care Team includingother Overnight Drop-In Support Mentors and Program Manager. In addition to theParticipant Care Team, the Shelter Support Mentor is also responsible forensuring positive interactions with collaterals associated with theparticipants being supported.

As a Drop-in Support Mentor you will:
  • Providedirect support to participants accessing the warming shelter.
  • Build afriendly, supportive relationship which includes working with participants in apositive manner.
  • Providedirect support during meetings with collateral agencies as an agencyrepresentative in a professional manner in the course of such business.
  • Assist theparticipants during times of crisis and respond appropriately to emergencysituations.
  • Ensure that there is adequate directsupervision in identified risk areas as per support plans.
  • The OvernightDrop-In Support Mentor is responsible for following all policies and proceduresrelated to the on-duty cellular phone and panic button.
  • Completegeneral housekeeping duties, such as cleaning floors, cleaning and sanitizingbathrooms, emptying garbage’s etc.
  • Ensure thatparticipants take all their personal belongings upon exit from the shelter.

Preferred Experience

Post secondary education in socialservices is considered an asset.

Optimally, one year of experience in arelated role and supporting individuals with disabilities and experiencinghomelessness.

Must demonstrate guidance anddiscipline techniques.
