Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to participants accessing the warming shelter.
  • Build a supportive relationship with participants.
  • Represent the agency in meetings with collateral agencies.
  • Assist participants during times of crisis and emergencies.
  • Follow all policies and safety procedures.
  • Complete housekeeping duties and maintain a clean space.
  • Report incidents to the Clinical Case Manager or designate.
  • Document daily shift occurrences accurately.
  • Ensure participant belongings are accounted for on exit.
  • Attend training and team meetings as scheduled.

Wage: $19.61 to $21.60 Hourly (Based on qualifications)

Note: Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor assigned to be the Primary Staff on each shift will receive an additional $1.50/hr. Premium

Shift Hours: WK 1: Monday, Saturday & Sunday / WK2: Tuesday - Friday: 7:30pm-7:30am

Preference: Will be given to Male applicants

(formally known as FASD Lives Journey Inc.) is a non-profit Social Services Agency that provides support to individuals who are impacted by neuro-developmental disorders, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Lives Journey strives towards a workforce that has fair representation of the community that we serve.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: PROGRAM MANAGER

The Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor is responsible for the ongoing direct support of the participants of the Overnight Warming Shelter Drop-in; ensuring all program requirements are consistently being met. This includes participating in the ongoing planning, monitoring, and communication of activities of the program participants. The Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor must also demonstrate effective guidance and discipline techniques continuously. The Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor is expected to follow the Personnel Policies, including Workplace Health and Safety Policies, Operational Practices, and the goals of Lives Journey Inc. in completing their duties.

This position works collaboratively with other members of the Participant Care Team including other Overnight Drop-In Support Mentors and Program Manager. In addition to the Participant Care Team, the Shelter Support Mentor is also responsible for ensuring positive interactions with collaterals associated with the participants being supported.

As a Drop-in Support Mentor you will:
  • Provide direct support to participants accessing the warming shelter.
  • Build a friendly, supportive relationship which includes working with participants in a positive manner.
  • Provide direct support during meetings with collateral agencies as an agency representative in a professional manner in the course of such business.
  • Assist the participants during times of crisis and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ensure that there is adequate direct supervision in identified risk areas as per support plans.
  • The Overnight Drop-In Support Mentor is responsible for following all policies and procedures related to the on-duty cellular phone and panic button.
  • Complete general housekeeping duties, such as cleaning floors, cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, emptying garbage's etc.
  • Ensure that participants take all their personal belongings upon exit from the shelter.
  • Attend employee meetings to review individual performance and development.
  • Attend training sessions as requested and/or scheduled.
  • Communicate and report to the Shelter Care Team on developments or incidents, as required or requested.
  • Provide timely verbal and/or written reports of any unusual occurrences or incidents to the Clinical Case Manager or designate.
  • Provide an appropriate role model with newer staff to ensure proper procedures and program plans are adhered to.
  • Provide accurate documentation of Daily shift occurrences.
  • Communicate with colleagues using the staff communication log.
  • Submit an accurate record of shifts worked on Payworks Web Time Log In.
  • Ensure the safety and security of all individuals, including personal safety, by actively monitoring, assessing, and confirming that safety measures are followed.
  • Be aware of all Workplace Safety and Health Policies and adhere to them, report any concerns.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
As a Successful Candidate you will possess the following Qualifications, experience and core competencies:
Required Qualifications
JOB-SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES
  • Basic initial requirements include a satisfactory Child and Adult Abuse Registry check, satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector search), and a satisfactory Drivers' abstract (if required).
  • Class 5F Driver's License.
  • A safe and reliable vehicle and proof of insurance on the vehicle with $2 million liability.
  • Certification of First Aid Level 1 - Emergency & CPR.
  • Demonstrated language, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • The ability to attend work regularly as scheduled or requested.
  • Ability to establish effective professional relationships and boundaries.
  • Demonstrate cultural knowledge and sensitivity and participate in agency training for development.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction practices and ability to work within a harm reduction framework.

Preferred Experience

Post secondary education in social services is considered an asset.

Optimally, one year of experience in a related role and supporting individuals with disabilities and experiencing homelessness.

Experience working with individuals struggling with addictions and mental health.

Must demonstrate guidance and discipline techniques.
