Organizational context

Organizational context: The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development and adequate housing for all. UN-Habitat supports governments and local authorities in implementing the Habitat Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals. The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This role supports the Periferia Viva Program in Santo André, São Paulo, focusing on improving living conditions in precarious settlements.

Job purpose

Job purpose: This role is crucial for the successful implementation of the Periferia Viva Program in Santo André, São Paulo, specifically within the "Núcleo Nova Centreville" area. The Local Mobiliser will work closely with UN-Habitat's operational and technical teams, as well as local authorities and community members. The primary purpose is to facilitate socio-territorial transformation by ensuring community participation and engagement in infrastructure improvements and public space requalification. This involves coordinating public policies, strengthening grassroots initiatives, and improving living conditions, thereby upholding the local population's right to adequate housing and fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment within the community.

Responsibilities

• The Local Mobiliser is responsible for actively promoting community participation and engagement in the Periferia Viva Program.
• This includes organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and assemblies to foster social participation.
• The role involves clearly communicating project information to the community, ensuring awareness of activities, and encouraging active involvement in decision-making and implementation.
• The Mobiliser will publicize the program within communities, attend project and local meetings as required, and ensure technical activities align with UN-Habitat's quality expectations.
• Additionally, the role requires preparing and submitting monthly activity reports and completing any indicated training, such as the BSAFE security course.

Education

A High School diploma is required. Alternatively, two additional years of relevant technical experience beyond the minimum requirement may be considered.

Work experience

A minimum of four years of experience in social mobilization, social work in urban communities or slums, or community organization is required. Previous experience working with the United Nations is desirable.

Skills

Good computer skills (Windows, Office packages, web search engines), professionalism, planning and organization, strong sense of responsibility, ability to work with minimal supervision, effective communication, teamwork, leadership, conflict management, consensus facilitation, ability to work in multicultural environments, and knowledge of UN-Habitat processes and procedures.
