UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, with its Regional Office in Rio de Janeiro, leads the Vida Nova no Morro project in Niterói to improve informal settlements through data systems and community engagement. The Field Supervisor will oversee fieldwork plans, data collection, and questionnaire quality, supervise Field Agents, liaise with public agencies, and ensure safety protocols.

Organizational context

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development and adequate housing for all. The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This role supports the \"Vida Nova no Morro\" project in Niterói, focused on improving urban conditions in informal settlements through data systems and community engagement.


Job purpose

The Field Supervisor will support the implementation of the \"Vida Nova no Morro\" project in Niterói, Brazil. This role is crucial for ensuring the effective execution of fieldwork activities, including data collection, community engagement, and compliance with project methodologies and safety protocols. The supervisor will collaborate with UN-Habitat's operational teams and local authorities to strengthen municipal data systems and institutional capacities for sustainable urban development, contributing to improved housing and urban conditions in vulnerable communities and reducing socio-spatial inequalities.


Responsibilities

The Field Supervisor is responsible for implementing active fieldwork plans, ensuring the quality and compliance of questionnaire application. This includes supporting the entry into new territories and closing research in designated areas, as well as overseeing Field Agents and managing daily data collection activities. The role involves providing support during meetings with public agencies, ensuring fieldwork optimization, and preparing periodic activity reports. Additionally, the supervisor will oversee fieldwork safety protocols, manage electronic equipment, report intercurrences, and assess data entry quality. They will also support fieldwork strategy design, provide logistical and organizational support for events and community interactions, maintain professional relations with counterparts, and disseminate project information.


Education

A Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Architecture, Territorial Planning, Engineering, Geography, Project Management, Statistics, or a related field is required. Alternatively, three additional years of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement may be considered.


Work experience

A minimum of three years of experience in research, data collection, and/or conducting interviews/questionnaires in Brazil, preferably in designated or vulnerable communities, is required. Experience in fieldwork supervision is desirable, as is previous experience within the UN System.


Skills

Good people skills (approachable, observant, open), good communication skills, good handling of technological tools, and good computer skills in Windows, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite are required. Experience with data collection applications like Kobo is desirable.
