Job summary

Canning Construction Pty Ltd in Far North Queensland is seeking a skilled Wall and Floor Tiler to join our construction team, delivering tiling and waterproofing across project sites.

The role requires a completed trade qualification, at least three years of hands-on tiling experience, and the ability to read plans and measure accurately. This full-time position includes an initial 12-month contract with probation and provides competitive salary plus 12% superannuation.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification in wall and floor tiling (e.g., Certificate III).
• At least 3 years of practical tiling experience.
• Ability to read drawings, calculate quantities and work accurately.
• Knowledge of QBCC requirements, NCC and Australian Standards for tiling/waterproofing.
• Hold or obtain QBCC licence as required; White Card preferred.

Responsibilities

• Carry out tiling and associated waterproofing per QBCC licensing and NCC standards.
• Read plans, check measurements and set out tile layouts.
• Prepare substrates, remove finishes, and grade floors.
• Measure, cut and install ceramic, porcelain and stone tiles.
• Mix and apply adhesives and mortar; grout and seal joints.
• Perform wet-area waterproofing within licence scope and supervision.
• Set out and verify falls to drainage for showers and wet areas.
• Ensure tile alignment, lippage, and adhesive coverage meet tolerances.
• Coordinate with supervisors and other trades; maintain tools and site safety.

Location: Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton Tablelands and Far North Queensland
Salary: $79,423.20 per year plus 12% superannuation
Hours: 38 ordinary hours per week, Monday to Friday

Canning Construction Pty Ltd is seeking a skilled Wall and Floor Tiler to join our construction team, working across project sites in Far North Queensland.

This is a full-time position on an initial 12-month contract, with an initial six-month probation period. Further 12-month contracts may be offered by mutual agreement, subject to applicable employment laws.

Your responsibilities

Carry out tiling and associated waterproofing in accordance with applicable QBCC licensing and scope-of-work requirements, the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant Australian Standards, approved plans and manufacturer specifications.

Read plans, check measurements and set out tile layouts.

Inspect and prepare substrates, remove existing finishes, and screed and grade floors to achieve the required levels and falls.

Measure, cut and install ceramic, porcelain and stone tiles.

Mix and apply adhesives and mortar appropriate to the surface and tile.

Complete grouting, sealing, movement joints and finishing work.

Undertake associated waterproofing only within the authorised licence scope and appropriate supervision arrangements, complying with applicable wet-area requirements, including AS 3740 where applicable.

Set out, form and verify compliant falls to floor wastes and drainage outlets, including showers and other wet areas, to achieve effective drainage without ponding or reverse falls.

Check tile alignment, lippage, adhesive coverage, movement joints and finished work against applicable standards and tolerances, and rectify defects.

Coordinate with supervisors and other trades, maintain tools and follow site safety requirements.

Skills and experience

A completed trade qualification in wall and floor tiling is essential, such as Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling or an equivalent recognised overseas trade qualification. Experience alone does not meet this requirement.

At least 3 years of practical experience as a wall and floor tiler, completing work to a high standard.

Ability to interpret drawings, calculate quantities and work accurately.

Working knowledge of applicable QBCC requirements, the NCC and Australian Standards for tiling and waterproofing.

Demonstrated ability to calculate, set out and check floor gradients, screeds and falls to drainage points.

Knowledge of surface preparation, adhesives, grouting, movement joints and wet-area waterproofing details.

Hold any QBCC licence required for the duties performed, or be eligible to obtain it before undertaking those duties. Employee work must be carried out within the employer’s authorised licence scope and required supervision arrangements.

Ability to work independently and as part of a construction team.

Construction White Card, or ability to obtain one before commencing site work.

Ability to travel to project sites throughout the advertised region.
