Description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS Data Centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to kickstart their career!

The Infrastructure Operations (Data Center) team is the backbone of AWS, supporting the rapidly growing AWS business and customers 24/7. We are committed to maintain the physical infrastructure of AWS, ensuring the standards for operational performance in the areas of safety, security, availability, productivity, capacity, efficiency, and cost.

The Data Center Engineering Operations trainee role offers a comprehensive 12-month development program. Participants will benefit from hands-on operational experience through on-site shadowing, complemented by weekly classroom sessions led by experienced AWS Certified Instructors. This structured training approach ensures each trainee develops the necessary skills and knowledge for operational excellence in data center management upon completion.

We welcome applications from individuals at the start of their careers, including final-year students and recent graduates from any engineering discipline, as well as trade school graduates. While technical knowledge is valuable, we prioritize candidates who demonstrate a positive attitude and embody Amazon's core values. We are looking for a result-driven individual with the drive and passion to learn data center engineering operations. The role will report to the DCEO Manager Upon completion of the 12-month trainee program, successful trainees will be offered a full time role.

Data Center Operations Engineering also provides a pathway to other AWS engineering teams. Successful trainees offered a full time position within the DCEO team have the opportunity to continue to refine their skills within the operations teams to a level making them an attractive candidate for senior operational roles as Chief Engineers or Facility Managers as well as external teams such as Commissioning, Field Engineering, COLO Engineering, Design Engineering, Safety Engineering, Enviro Engineering, Construction Management and many more.

You’ll interface with a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

To be successful in this role, you will be required to complete a background check as part of the hiring process.

This position is for a 12 month fixed term hire with a possibility to convert to a full time role.

Key job responsibilities

Responsibilities Include

  • Learning the Data Center industry through in-classroom and on-site experience.
  • Assist the on-site management of contractors, sub-contractors and vendors, ensuring that all work performed, is in accordance with established practices, procedures & local legislation.
  • Maintaining performance benchmarks, conduct analyses & prepare reports on all aspects of the critical facility infrastructure operations & maintenance.
  • Generate Change Management requests & Incident Management tickets for DCEO as directed.
  • Learn and contribute to documentation relevant to business & facility operations.
  • Assist with the installation of the racks and the provision of power/cooling within its constraints.
  • Be involved with the routine maintenance and emergency services on a variety of critical systems such as: switchgear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.
  • Assist and learn about the design, implementation, commissioning and build out of new facilities.
  • Assist with the management of the Facility assets and the provision of infrastructure & inventory asset management as directed.
  • May participate in Construction & Operational Meetings as required.
  • Assist with Work Order compliance and review of contractual SLAs.
  • Interface with Infra Ops teams for day to day operational requirements.
  • Assist in the resolution of any infrastructure engineering or services issue.
  • Delivery of exceptional customer service and satisfaction.
  • Meet daily hours of operations, shift and on-call requirements for response during shift rotations.

A day in the life

At today’s large-scale data centers, you will be involved in:

  • Provide support and assistance to the onsite operations team, in troubleshooting of facility and rack-level events within internal Service-Level Agreements (SLA).
  • Deep diving alarms and incidents on highly complex mission critical equipment to a granular level to find a root cause.
  • Manage and lead incident response, providing updates to senior leadership using incoming critical data to empower decision making.
  • Perform rack installs, rack decommissioning, and facility management.
  • Provide operational readings and key performance indicators to make sure uptime is maintained.
  • On-site management of contractors, subcontractors and vendors, ensuring that all work performed is in accordance with established practices, procedures & local legislation.
  • Performance and oversight of maintenance and operations on all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center.
