Job description

The Information Technology team at Sigma Healthcare is responsible for the design, implementation and support of all of Sigma’s technology stack, including Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP S/4 HANA, decentralised EWM, SAP SaaS products (including Concur, Ariba, SuccessFactors and IBP), Salesforce, Retail POS within Chemist Warehouse and a multitude of supporting applications. We are a team of approximately 250 dedicated staff, supplemented by external IT organisations to provide a cohesive ecosystem of solutions to our business

About the Role

Reporting into the National Manager Enterprise Technology and Customer Service, the Technical Lead - MPS Applications is a highly technical, hands‑on engineer, who builds and designs software alongside the team.

You will provide technical direction, guide day‑to‑day engineering decisions, and help create an environment where engineers can do their best work. Alongside this, you’ll take on light‑touch people leadership, supporting, mentoring, and growing the team, while helping establish strong engineering practices that scale with the MPS business.

Role Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Software Engineering strategy, delivering pragmatic, scalable and sustainable solutions that support business growth.
  • Provide hands‑on technical leadership across design, architecture and implementation, ensuring alignment with platform standards and maintaining a secure, performant and high‑quality codebase through development, code reviews and continuous improvement.
  • Design and deliver new features alongside the team, working collaboratively with product managers, designers and engineers to clarify requirements, communicate trade-offs and achieve shared outcomes.
  • Promote effective agile practices and healthy delivery by providing clarity, removing obstacles, supporting production readiness and ensuring appropriate standards for incident response, release safety, monitoring, operational handover and ongoing support.
  • Build team capability through mentoring, pairing and regular feedback, while empowering engineers to take ownership and partnering with Security, Cloud and DevOps teams to embed secure engineering practices and controls.
Who are we looking for?
  • 5+ years’ experience developing and maintaining complex, enterprise‑grade systems, with a strong focus on long‑term maintainability, performance, reliability and quality.
  • 5+ years’ experience in database design, including relational and NoSQL databases, with an understanding of performance optimisation.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and DevOps practices.
  • Proven technical leadership within delivery teams, balancing hands‑on development with setting technical direction, guiding design decisions, establishing standards, reviewing code and taking ownership of technical outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineers through pairing, feedback, collaboration and knowledge sharing, while supporting consistent, high‑quality delivery.
  • A solution‑focused approach to complex technical and architectural challenges, with strong communication skills and the ability to explain decisions, trade‑offs and approaches to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
