Job summary

Qantas Airways Limited is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Back End to join the new Product Innovation Centre in Adelaide. You will guide architecture, delivery and development of high-traffic backend systems, with hands-on coding to ensure quality, reliability and security.

You will work with Java/Spring Boot and Node.js, deploy to AWS, and utilize Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tools while mentoring junior developers and driving continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• 6+ years in a hands-on Software Engineering role.
• Strong experience building high-traffic backend applications.
• Experience with backend technologies (Java, Spring / Spring Boot, Node JS) and databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB).
• Understanding of cloud-native development on AWS, including deployment, scaling, and operational considerations.
• Containerisation technology concepts, such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (preferably GitHub Actions), version control (Git), and automated testing practices.
• Experience using observability and monitoring tools (e.g. Splunk, Datadog) to support production systems.
• A real passion for quality, clean code and continuous improvement.
• Strong understanding of architectural concepts and cloud-based solution design.
• Experience writing multi-threaded, asynchronous code.
• Experience designing and building event-driven architectures, using tools such as Kafka, SNS/SQS, or EventBridge.
• Demonstrable ability to motivate self and others, and a passion to mentor junior developers.

As a Senior Software Engineer (Back-End), you’ll be responsible for guiding and leading the architecture, delivery and development of the software systems that power our business unit. A hands-on, highly skilled software developer with the experience to dive into code to deliver high quality, well-designed software. You will share responsibility for the quality of the software being built, including but not limited to; achieving desired business outcomes, meeting reliability and performance expectations and safely managing security and data privacy concerns.

You’ll have:

• 6+ years in a hands-on Software Engineering role
• Strong experience building high-traffic backend applications
• Working experience with back-end technologies (i.e Java, Spring / Spring Boot, Node JS) and databases (e.g PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, etc)
• Understanding of cloud-native development on platforms such as AWS, including deployment, scaling, and operational considerations
• Containerisation technology concepts, such as Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (preferably GitHub Actions), version control (Git), and automated testing practices
