Synopsis:

Agency Purpose

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The AEC’s values and commitments

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

About the Team

The Roll Operations and Silent Cell section is responsible for managing the operations of the Australian electoral roll through the development, implementation and evaluation of enrolment policy and procedures, as well as the centralised processing of silent elector enrolments.

The team oversees day-to-day enrolment matters, including maintaining procedural guidance, reference materials and capability development initiatives for state and divisional network staff. It delivers key projects associated with federal, state and local government elections, including close of rolls activities and electoral boundary redistributions. The team works closely with internal and external stakeholders to deliver outcomes that support the integrity, effectiveness and continuous improvement of Australia's electoral system.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join the AEC and contribute to work that has a direct impact on Australia's democratic processes.

As a Senior Project Officer, you will play an important role in delivering high-quality outcomes by contributing to the management of the electoral roll through the development, implementation and evaluation of enrolment policy.

As part of a collaborative and high-performing team, you will contribute to the enrolment program through the delivery of key projects, the provision of clear and practical policy advice, support for staff responsible for enrolment processing, and the development and maintenance of enrolment guidance and doctrine. You will build strong working relationships across the organisation and with key stakeholders to support the delivery of high-quality outcomes.

This role provides an opportunity to apply your skills and experience in a dynamic environment while contributing to nationally significant outcomes. You will be supported by experienced colleagues and have access to professional development opportunities that will help you grow your career within the APS.

To excel you’ll have:

  • Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high-quality work while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in setting priorities, managing workloads and delivering quality results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders across geographically dispersed teams, while building productive working relationships and responding to stakeholder needs.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to identify opportunities for improvement, contribute to change initiatives and support innovation.
  • Proven capacity to exercise sound judgement, professionalism and integrity while achieving results within legislative and policy frameworks.
Desirable
  • Ability to quickly acquire and apply knowledge of relevant electoral legislation, policies and operational practices.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in policy, management, public administration or similar.
Eligibility
  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
