Synopsis:

Agency Purpose

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The AEC’s values and commitments

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

About the Team

The AEC has a dispersed network of 150 electoral divisions across all states and territories. The Northern Territory Office, located in Darwin, forms part of the NT and WA State Office, which oversees electoral operations across the divisions of Solomon and Lingiari.

You will join a national network of Team Leaders responsible for leading work units that support the delivery of federal elections and referendums with integrity, transparency and professionalism. You will work closely with our State Office, National Office and colleagues across other states and territories.

Each APS 6 Team Leader will typically oversee a team of around 2–10 staff; however, team sizes increase significantly during election events as we scale up and engage a temporary election workforce. During an election event, you may undertake the legislative responsibilities of the Divisional Returning Officer for a federal electoral division and play a key role in delivering election outcomes with transparency, integrity and public confidence.

During federal elections and by-elections, the workforce expands significantly to support increased operational demands, including risk management, project delivery, logistics, stakeholder engagement, and heightened public and media interest.

At the AEC, you will develop strong connections with colleagues and supportive networks, as we all work to deliver an impartial and independent electoral system with high integrity.

The Opportunities

The Northern Territory State Office is seeking multiple Team Leaders to support the planning, delivery and evaluation of electoral events. This is an exciting opportunity to join the AEC and contribute to work that has a direct impact on Australia's democratic processes.

We are seeking capable and adaptable leaders to guide teams responsible for divisional election planning, delivery and evaluation. You will be comfortable working in a dynamic environment, exercising sound judgement, managing competing priorities and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve outcomes.

During the preparation phase of the electoral cycle, you will lead activities that support the accuracy and integrity of the electoral roll, helping eligible Australians exercise their voting rights. You will also lead your team in preparing for future electoral events and operational priorities.

You will contribute to both short and long-term planning, setting priorities, maintaining team performance and cohesion, and ensuring high-quality outcomes across the work area.

You will be responsible for the overall supervision of our temporary election staff, using your leadership skills to support the expanding workforce requirements seamlessly and efficiently.

You will join a leadership team committed to continuous learning, capability development and supporting the growth and success of its people.

To excel you’ll have:

We are seeking a motivated and capable professional who can demonstrate the skills, knowledge and experience required to perform successfully in this role, including:

  • Proven capacity to exercise sound judgement and make effective decisions by analysing complex information and applying relevant legislation, policy, procedures or operational requirements.
  • Experience in developing and supporting team members to build capability, improve performance and achieve high-quality business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering education, engagement or public awareness initiatives that support diverse communities, including First Nations peoples, in line with organisational priorities and strategies.
  • Ability to lead teams, set priorities and coordinate resources to deliver quality outcomes within agreed timeframes in a project, program or operational environment.
