Synopsis:

Agency Purpose

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The AEC’s values and commitments

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

About the Team

The AEC’s South Australia State Office is located in metropolitan Adelaide and is responsible for delivering electoral services, including electoral roll management, voter participation initiatives and preparation activities for federal electoral events across South Australia. The team consists of a State Manager, Director of Operations and a workforce that scales up significantly during federal elections.

When a federal election is announced, staffing levels increase rapidly to support the delivery of a major national event. This work involves coordinating large-scale and high-priority activities in a fast‑paced environment with heightened public, media and stakeholder interest, strict timeframes and multiple interconnected operational priorities.

The Opportunities

This is an exciting opportunity to join the AEC and contribute to work that has a direct impact on Australia's democratic processes.

The South Australia State Office is seeking multiple Service Support Officers to help maintain the integrity of the Australian electoral roll and support the delivery of electoral services. In this role, you will assist with supervision of APS 1 employees, provide customer-focused public services when required, and work closely with Project Officers and Service Officers, reporting to an APS 6 Team Leader.

The Service Support Officer role is part-time; however, full-time work may be required during peak workload periods.

This is an agile role that undertakes basic to moderately complex work under general direction. The role contributes to enrolment administration and supports a range of projects throughout the electoral cycle, responding to changing operational priorities as required.

During federal election events, workforce responsibilities increase significantly. Service Support Officers assist with the supervision of the Temporary Election Workforce (TEW), support the implementation of operational delivery plans and contribute to the effective operation of their nominated Outposted Centre (OPC) under the direction of a Divisional Returning Officer (DRO).

To excel you’ll have:

We are seeking motivated and capable professionals who can demonstrate the skills, knowledge and experience required to perform successfully in this role, including:

  • Demonstrated resilience, adaptability and initiative when working in changing operational environments, including the ability to remain positive and respond effectively to evolving priorities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively and build productive working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively as part of a team, contributing to shared goals and supporting positive workplace outcomes.
  • The ability to act with integrity, take responsibility for your work and make appropriate decisions within established procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for the accurate completion of work, manage competing tasks and seek guidance when required.
  • Experience in identifying potential issues that may affect the delivery of work, escalating concerns appropriately and contributing ideas to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently when required, including managing priorities and maintaining productivity while working remotely from direct supervision.

Eligibility

  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
