Job summary

Binnies is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead water and wastewater mechanical design packages in Australia, with roles in Brisbane or Perth. You will combine hands-on design with technical leadership, client engagement and commercial control to deliver designs that can be constructed, operated and maintained safely.

You will coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, support studies, design and construction delivery, and travel as required by the assignment.

Qualifications

• Substantial water or wastewater mechanical design experience is mandatory.
• Typically eight or more years of relevant engineering experience.
• Proven delivery of treatment plant or pump station designs, including equipment selection and multidisciplinary coordination.

Responsibilities

• Define the mechanical scope, design basis, deliverables, interfaces, resources and budget for assigned packages.
• Lead equipment selection and mechanical design for pumping, treatment, chemical dosing, aeration, sludge handling and pipework systems within your area of competence.
• Prepare and review pump duty and system calculations, equipment specifications, valve schedules, layouts and pipework designs; coordinate surge, stress or other specialist analyses where required.
• Direct designers and engineers, allocate work to suit competence, check outputs and resolve interfaces with process, civil, structural, electrical and automation teams.
• Plan brownfield tie-ins and staged upgrades with operators and contractors, addressing isolation, maintainability, lifting, equipment removal and continuity of service.
• Lead mechanical input to safety in design, constructability and operability reviews; contribute to HAZOP and ensure risks and actions are resolved or handed over.
• Manage technical interfaces with suppliers and contractors, evaluate bids and vendor submissions, and resolve construction queries within the scope.
• Support factory and site testing, installation inspections, commissioning and defect resolution; maintain traceable decisions and clear acceptance recommendations.
• Prepare proposal scopes and fee estimates, build client relationships, report forecasts and changes early, and mentor engineers through constructive review and practical guidance.

Education

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent relevant engineering qualification
