Job description

Junior Mechanical Engineer - Water and wastewater infrastructure
Location - Brisbane or Perth

Support mechanical design for water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and associated pipework. Build technical capability through supervised project delivery while contributing accurate calculations, equipment documentation and coordinated design information.

Working with Binnies Australia

We deliver water engineering consultancy for utilities, government and industrial clients, including treatment upgrades, conveyance and mine water projects. You will work with multidisciplinary teams and draw on Binnies and RSK specialists, including colleagues in other offices, to support studies, design and construction delivery.

The role supports direct client commissions and contractor-led design and construct projects. Work includes coordination with suppliers, operators and delivery partners, with site visits and travel as required by the assignment.

Role responsibilities
  • Review drawings, asset records and vendor information; assist with site surveys, equipment inventories and condition assessments, recording uncertainties for senior review.
  • Undertake supervised calculations for pipework losses, pump duties and equipment sizing. Document units, assumptions and sources and seek help when results are uncertain.
  • Assist with selection and specification of pumps, valves, screens, blowers, chemical dosing and sludge equipment appropriate to each project.
  • Prepare equipment data sheets, valve and equipment schedules, technical specifications and drawing mark-ups; maintain alignment with process duties and project requirements.
  • Assist CAD and BIM designers with layouts and pipework arrangements, considering maintenance access, equipment removal, isolation, drainage and safe operation.
  • Coordinate assigned interfaces with process, civil, structural, electrical and control engineers. Record actions and resolve comments with the supervising engineer.
  • Support vendor document reviews, technical comparisons and construction queries. Attend inspections or factory and site testing when required, under appropriate supervision.
  • Participate in safety in design and project reviews; keep calculations and documents controlled, submit work for checking, record time accurately and report progress or delays early.
Essential qualifications and experience
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent relevant engineering qualification.
  • Practical water-sector experience is mandatory, gained through employment, an internship or an industry placement involving water or wastewater assets. Academic projects alone do not satisfy this requirement.
  • Typically one to three years of early career experience; applicants with substantial relevant placement experience may also be considered.
  • Understanding of fluid mechanics, pumps, valves and pipework, and the ability to read engineering drawings and piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Ability to carry out basic engineering calculations, use Excel effectively and prepare clear records suitable for technical checking.
  • Careful, organised working habits; willingness to ask questions, act on feedback and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Exposure to treatment plants, pump stations, equipment suppliers, site inspections or commissioning activities.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Revit, Navisworks or comparable tools; experience using vendor pump selection software.
  • Awareness of Australian water authority standards, mechanical specifications and safety in design; interest in progressing towards professional registration.
  • Attractive parental leave policy
  • Employee Assistance Program, including for your family
  • Diverse working environment
  • Wide network of resources through sister companies worldwide as part of RSK Group
