Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, motivate, and develop the store team to achieve high performance and a positive, customer-centric culture

• Oversee day-to-day store operations for smooth trading and presentation across departments

Job description

The Store Manager is accountable for the overall leadership, operational performance, profitability, and customer experience of a Foodworks supermarket. As an independent, community-focused retailer, the role requires a hands-on leader who drives sales and gross profit while delivering high standards of fresh food quality, store presentation, customer service, and local community engagement. The Store Manager builds and develops a capable, engaged team, ensures compliance with all food safety, workplace health and safety, and retail regulations in Queensland, and positions the store as the preferred local supermarket for the community it serves.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach, motivate, and develop the store team to achieve high performance and a positive, customer-centric culture
• Recruit, induct, train, and performance-manage team members in accordance with company policies and relevant awards
• Prepare and manage efficient, compliant rosters that balance customer demand, wage costs, and team wellbeing
• Oversee all day-to-day store operations to ensure smooth, efficient trading and excellent presentation standards across all departments
• Maintain high standards of stock availability, accurate pricing, merchandising, and planogram compliance
• Manage inventory control, ordering, receiving, stocktakes, and shrinkage reduction
• Drive sales growth, gross profit, and overall store profitability against targets and budgets
• Monitor and control key costs, including wages, cost of goods, waste, and operating expenses
• Ensure full compliance with Queensland and Australian food safety standards, temperature control, hygiene, labelling, and allergen management
• Maintain a strong workplace health and safety culture and ensure safe systems of work for team and customers

About you

• Proven experience as a Store Manager or senior retail manager in a supermarket, grocery, or high-volume independent retail environment (preferably 3-5+ years)
• Strong commercial acumen with demonstrated ability to manage P&L, drive sales, control costs, and interpret financial and operational data
• Excellent leadership, coaching, and people-management skills with experience building and developing teams
• Sound knowledge of supermarket operations, including fresh food handling, inventory management, merchandising, and customer service
• High level of organisational, prioritisation, and problem-solving ability in a fast-paced environment
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Current Food Safety Supervisor certification or willingness and ability to obtain promptly
• Working knowledge of relevant Queensland and national legislation including Fair Work, workplace health and safety, and food safety
• Computer literacy, including POS systems, rostering software, Microsoft Office, and reporting tools
• Flexibility to work a roster that includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays as required by store trading hours
