Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Principal Power Systems Engineer for our Energy practice in Australia. The role focuses on leading grid connection projects, developing technical advisory, and supporting renewables, mining and industrial clients across NW Australia and Queensland.

You will mentor engineers, oversee model development (PSS/e/PSCAD/Digsilent), and guide design through commissioning while aligning with NSP and regional operator requirements. Hybrid work options apply.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with major in power systems.
• 5+ years (Senior) or 8+ years (Principal) in a design/engineering consultancy, OEM or utility dealing with grid compliance and modelling.
• Experience with grid-scale renewables (wind/solar/battery) and connections to NEM & WEM in Australia.
• Coaching and mentoring of junior staff is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead steady-state and dynamic studies for islanded/weak power systems including load flow, fault levels, protection coordination, voltage/reactive power control, frequency response and transient stability.
• Develop methodologies and scenarios to assess power systems for client-driven SAPS projects and NSP/regional operator requirements.
• Assess integration of diesel, gas, solar, wind, storage, grid-forming and grid-following inverters for large mining or industrial loads.
• Prepare technical assessment reports for new connections, network augmentations, and decarbonisation projects.
• Lead technical workstreams, manage quality, mentor engineers and contribute to proposals.
