Job summary

NEPEAN Longwall in Mackay is seeking a driven Mechanical Engineer to join the team. You will contribute to the design, analysis and support of longwall mining equipment and componentry, working with engineering, drafting, procurement and field teams.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager – QLD, you will be involved from concept through to detailed design, manufacture and in-field support, including development mining equipment and diesel vehicles distributed by NEPEAN in Australia.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering.
• 5–10 years of engineering experience in mining, heavy industrial, or manufacturing.
• Experience with longwall or underground coal mining equipment is highly regarded.
• Strong 3D CAD design and analysis using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Vault.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems for longwall mining equipment, including AFCs, BSLs, drive units, chain and flight systems and structural steelwork.
• Complete engineering calculations and analysis, including stress, fatigue and load analysis, to meet safety and customer requirements.
• Produce and review 3D models, assembly models and detailed drawings using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault.
• Prepare and review specifications, BOMs, technical reports and design verification records.
• Collaborate with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication and site teams to deliver practical outcomes.

About the role

We are currently seeking a driven Mechanical Engineer to join our Mackay-based team. This is a hands‑on engineering role where you will contribute to the design, analysis and support of longwall mining equipment and componentry, while working closely with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication and customer‑facing teams.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager – QLD, you will be involved from concept through to detailed design, manufacture, installation and in‑field support. The role also provides engineering support for development mining equipment and diesel vehicles distributed by NEPEAN in Australia, including technical evaluation, localisation and ongoing support for the Australian market.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems for longwall mining equipment, including AFCs, BSLs, drive units, chain and flight systems and structural steelwork.
• Complete engineering calculations and analysis, including stress, fatigue and load analysis, to ensure designs meet operational, safety and customer requirements.
• Produce and review 3D models, assembly models and detailed drawings using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault.
• Prepare and review engineering documentation such as specifications, bills of materials, technical reports and design verification records.
• Collaborate with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication, quality, site service teams, customers and suppliers to deliver practical project outcomes.
• Provide technical support during equipment installation, commissioning and in‑service operation.
• Support root‑cause investigations, warranty matters and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to safe, reliable, cost‑effective and manufacturable design solutions for underground coal mining operations.

About You:

• Tertiary Qualifications in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering.
• 5-10 years previous engineering experience gained within mining, heavy industrial or manufacturing environments.
• Experience with longwall or underground coal mining equipment will be highly regarded.
• Previous exposure to Hydraulic or Diesel vehicles
• Strong 3D CAD design and analysis capability, ideally using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault.
• Working knowledge of Australian Standards such as AS4100, AS3990 and AS3800, along with safety-in-design principles, will be advantageous.
• Strong analytical ability, practical problem‑solving skills and sound engineering judgement.
• Confident communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, customers and suppliers.
• A collaborative approach and a genuine commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
• Willingness to undertake occasional site, interstate or international travel as required.
