Job summary

Australian Department of Veterans' Affairs in Melbourne seeks an EL1 Assistant Director to lead HR Connect, the department’s HR front door advisory service. You will direct, mentor and develop a diverse team, ensuring timely, customer-centric HR support across the department and alignment with workforce strategy.

You will oversee service demand, identify risks, and drive continuous improvement while coordinating with People Services and shared service providers to deliver high-quality HR

Qualifications

• Australian citizenship is required to be employed in the APS.
• Pre-engagement screening will be conducted for external appointments, plus baseline Vetting (AGSVA) clearance.
• Experience leading an HR front-door advisory service and managing diverse teams is essential.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage HR Connect front-door advisory service to deliver timely, consistent HR advice.
• Provide leadership, coaching and capability development to staff; foster an inclusive, high-performing culture.
• Allocate resources and workloads to achieve service delivery outcomes amid competing priorities.
• Offer strategic and operational advice on complex HR matters, including policy interpretation and people management issues.
• Monitor service delivery performance, identify risks and trends, and implement improvement strategies.
• Analyse operational data to inform decisions and identify capability gaps.
• Manage relationships with shared service providers and escalate issues when needed.
• Lead projects and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with organisational priorities.
• Exercise delegated authority in line with governance requirements.
• Represent the work area in meetings, working groups and cross-functional initiatives.
