Job summary

Peoplebank is seeking an EL2 Principal Platform Engineer for a Federal Government client in Canberra (ACT). The role involves designing, building, operating and maturing secure, scalable cloud platforms across AWS and Azure, with strong emphasis on Kubernetes, CI/CD, and automation.

Australian citizens with NV1 clearance are required for this 12-month contract term with extension options. The position focuses on platform governance, self-service developer experiences and reusable engineering

About The Role

Our Federal Government Client is seeking an EL2 Principal Platform Engineer.

This is a long-term contract role 12-month term with extension option, located at our client's Canberra (ACT).

As The Selected Candidate, You Will

• Design, build, operate and continuously improve reusable platform services, cloud-native capabilities and secure delivery patterns supporting the application and product teams.
• Establish and maintain platform standards, golden paths, templates, guardrails and automation that enable safe, consistent and efficient delivery.
• Enhance developer experience through self-service capabilities, internal developer portals, reusable patterns, documentation and enablement activities.
• Embed secure platform engineering practices including automated security controls, vulnerability management, compliance checks and secure-by-design approaches.
• Improve platform reliability, observability and operational maturity through monitoring, alerting, incident response support and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Lead platform roadmap planning, governance and the development of platform standards, reference architectures and reusable engineering patterns.
• Manage platform capabilities as internal products, including lifecycle management, adoption metrics and continual service improvement.
• Collaborate with delivery, architecture, security, operations and business stakeholders to promote platform engineering best practices.

To Be Successful In This Role You Should Have

• Extensive experience designing, implementing and operating secure, scalable cloud platforms across AWS and Azure.
• Deep expertise in containerisation, Kubernetes and orchestration technologies.
• Proven capability in CI/CD enablement, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), automation, developer self-service and modern engineering toolchains including GitLab, GitHub, Artifactory and Jira.
• Strong application of secure platform engineering principles including embedded security controls, automated testing, vulnerability management, policy-as-code and compliance automation.
• Experience designing and supporting internal developer platforms, service mesh architectures and self-service capabilities that improve developer experience, observability and resilience.
• Demonstrated ability to establish platform governance frameworks, engineering standards, guardrails and operational controls, including participation in after-hours on-call support.

It Is Desirable If You Have

• Experience with internal developer portals, platform catalogues and self-service platforms such as Backstage.
• Familiarity with enterprise observability practices and tooling including OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, metrics, logging and service health monitoring.
• Experience with HashiCorp Vault or equivalent secrets management technologies, policy-as-code and automated compliance controls.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, platform services and enterprise systems.

Due to security clearance requirements for this role, candidates must be Australian citizens with the ability to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance.
