Job summary

Katherine Town Council's Katherine Public Library is seeking a friendly Library Assistant to join the team on a permanent part-time basis. You will help patrons access information, technology and programs, and assist with loans, memberships and daily library tasks.

This role focuses on customer service, shelving, support for programs, opening/closing, and maintaining a welcoming environment, with weekend availability and a Working with Children Clearance preferred.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to relate respectfully to diverse community members.
• Good literacy, numeracy and keyboard skills.
• Basic knowledge of customer-service principles and common software platforms.
• Ability to follow procedures and understand relevant legislation, Council policies and local laws.
• Ability to work both cooperatively within a team and independently.
• Availability to work weekends.
• Current Working with Children Clearance, or ability to obtain one if required.

Responsibilities

• Providing friendly and professional service to library patrons.
• Processing library memberships, loans, returns and payments.
• Assisting patrons with computers, Wi-Fi, printing, scanning and other technologies.
• Shelving and organizing books and maintaining the library collection.
• Processing new stock, identifying damaged items and assisting with stocktakes.
• Supporting library programs, events and school holiday activities.
• Promoting library services and encouraging community participation.
• Opening and closing the library as required.
• Maintaining a clean, safe, organised and welcoming environment.
• Receiving and balancing financial transactions in accordance with Council procedures.
