Business Development Manager - Material Science

The Business Development Manager, Material Science is responsible for driving sustainable growth across Evident Australia's High End Material Sciences Research Microscopy portfolio throughout Australia and New Zealand. The role combines strategic business development, consultative sales and advanced technical expertise to identify new opportunities, grow existing customer relationships and position Evident as the partner of choice for advanced microscopy solutions. An important part of the role is to troubleshoot applications and train end users on instrumentation. Working with Universities, Government Research Institutes, commercial laboratories, start-ups and industrial organisations, the Business Development Manager manages the complete sales cycle while collaborating with Sales, Marketing, Product Management and Service teams to deliver outstanding customer outcomes.

Key responsibilities

Business Development & Sales

• Achieve annual sales, revenue and gross profit targets.
• Develop and execute territory and account plans that deliver sustainable growth across industrial, academic and research markets..
• Identify, qualify and secure new business opportunities across research and commercial markets.
• Build strong relationships with key decision-makers, materials scientists, engineers, R&D teams and technical leaders.
• Manage complex capital equipment sales, including quotations, tenders and contract negotiations.
• Maintain an accurate sales pipeline, forecasting and CRM records, ensuring alignment with customer projects and purchasing cycles.

Technical & Customer Support

• Develop and maintain expert knowledge of Evident's high-end materials science microscopy portfolio and associated applications, including materials characterization, failure analysis and quality control.
• Deliver product demonstrations, technical presentations and application-focused guidance to materials scientists, engineers, researchers and industrial customers throughout the sales process
• Support customer evaluations, installations and user training in collaboration with Product Management and Applications teams.
• Provide trusted technical and commercial advice on microscopy solutions for materials research, manufacturing, inspection and quality assurance throughout the customer lifecycle.

Market Development

• Monitor market trends, competitor activity and emerging research opportunities.
• Develop relationships with Key Opinion Leaders and strategic research organisations.
• Represent Evident at conferences, workshops and industry events.
• Support product launches and marketing initiatives that strengthen Evident's market position.

Collaboration & Operational Excellence

• Work collaboratively with Sales, Marketing, Service and Customer Support teams to deliver an outstanding customer experience.
• Maintain demonstration equipment and company assets in good working order.
• Complete administrative activities, reporting and forecasting accurately and on time.
• Contribute to a positive team culture and continuous business improvement.

About you

• Degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
• Demonstrated success in business development or technical sales of scientific or capital equipment.
• Strong commercial acumen with experience managing complex sales opportunities.
• Excellent communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.
• Current Australian Driver Licence.
• Ability to travel throughout Australia and New Zealand.
• Experience with advanced microscopy, materials characterization or imaging technologies (e.g. optical, electron or X-ray microscopy) - desirable.
• Postgraduate research experience or PhD - desirable.
• Experience within universities, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, mining, metallurgy or industrial R&D markets - desirable.
• Experience using Salesforce CRM or equivalent - desirable.
