Job description

Make a meaningful impact on how risk is managed

Bring your banking risk and controls experience to a role where you can influence how risk is understood, managed and improved across a highly visible part of TMBL.

As Business Controls Manager, you’ll be the first-line risk expert for Sales & Marketing, working across lending, the branch network, member relationships, broker and third-party lending, marketing and strategic partnerships. Lending is a particular focus, including the end-to-end mortgage journey and responsible lending obligations.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys more than maintaining an established framework. TMBL is continuing to uplift its risk and controls environment, giving you scope to strengthen controls, improve processes and help embed effective risk behaviours across the business.

Why this role matters

You’ll work closely with people across front-line teams and senior leadership, providing practical first-line risk expertise while partnering with Line 2 Risk. You’ll help teams identify and respond to incidents and issues, assess controls and turn risk insight into meaningful improvements.

For someone who enjoys analytical challenge, regulatory impact and cross-functional collaboration, there’s an opportunity here to make your expertise count.

In this role, you’ll
  • Champion effective first-line risk management and help embed strong risk behaviours across Sales & Marketing.
  • Partner with stakeholders on risk, obligations and controls, providing practical advice to support business objectives and sustainable outcomes.
  • Triage and manage incidents, issues and compliance matters, helping teams identify root causes and appropriate actions.
  • Assess and strengthen the control environment through controls testing, assurance and targeted controls uplift.
  • Coordinate risk reporting, KRIs and agreed actions, supporting reporting into management and Board risk forums.
  • Work across business areas including Customer, Operations and IT, influencing stakeholders and helping establish clear ownership of incidents and actions.
What you’ll bring

You’ll bring strong banking risk and controls capability, with the confidence to operate as a trusted first-line risk partner.

Essential

We’re looking for:

  • Experience in a Business Controls Manager, first-line risk or comparable senior banking risk role.
  • Practical experience across controls, controls testing, issues and incident management and risk reporting.
  • The ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders ranging from front-line employees to senior leaders.
  • The judgement to balance appropriate risk discipline with practical commercial outcomes.
  • Strong organisation and the ability to work autonomously across competing risk priorities.
Nice to have

Experience in mortgages or lending will be particularly valuable, including exposure to direct and broker/third-party lending, responsible lending obligations, secured lending or end-to-end lending transformation. If you have strong first-line banking risk experience without direct mortgage experience, we’d still encourage you to apply.
