Job summary

Sharp and Carter is seeking an ambitious Assistant Project Accountant in Melbourne to join a well-established property organisation. You will support budgeting, forecasting, and financial management across multiple projects while engaging with stakeholders to deliver timely financial information.

This early-career role offers exposure to project-focused finance, with mentoring and development within a collaborative team that values accuracy, initiative, and a genuine interest in the property

Qualifications

• 1-2 years of accounting experience within industry, business services or similar.
• Strong grounding in accounting fundamentals (debits/credits, journals, reconciliations, P&L reporting).
• Degree qualified in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or related discipline.
• Excellent problem-solving and learning agility with strong communication skills.
• CA or CPA studies commenced or planned in the near future.
• Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills are desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation and maintenance of project budgets and forecasts.
• Support month-end and year-end accounting processes, including journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Assist with management reporting and project performance analysis.
• Monitor project income and expenditure and investigate variances where required.
• Maintain financial records and project information within internal systems.
• Support stakeholder reporting and respond to project-related financial queries.
• Assist with compliance requirements, including statutory reporting obligations.
• Partner with operational teams to provide financial support and commercial insights.
• Assist with cash flow monitoring and project funding administration.
• Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely financial information.
• Contribute to process improvements and ad hoc financial analysis.
• Provide general accounting and administrative support to the broader finance team.

Skills & Experience

• 1-2 years' accounting experience, ideally within industry, business services, or public practice.
• Degree qualified in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related discipline.
• Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals, including debits, credits, journals, reconciliations, balance sheets, and profit and loss reporting.
• Strong academic record.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and learning agility.
• Demonstrated maturity, accountability, and initiative.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• High attention to detail and analytical capability.
• Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Exposure to month-end processes and financial reporting will be highly regarded.
• CA or CPA studies commenced, or an intention to commence in the near future.
• Experience within property, construction, infrastructure, or other project-based environments will be advantageous but is not essential.
• Candidates from public practice seeking their first move into industry are encouraged to apply.
