Job summary

MRAEL has partnered with Peabody Energy to offer a Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship commencing January 2027, hosted at Centurion Mine. This fixed-term program provides structured on‑the‑job training under experienced tradespeople within Queensland's newest underground longwall operation.

You will complete trade training, undertake on-site maintenance and fault finding of underground equipment, and work with a safety-focused team to develop your skills toward becoming a qualified tradesperson.

Qualifications

  • Interest in mechanical equipment and a willingness to learn.
  • Year 12 completed or equivalent; Pass in Pre-vocational English and Mathematics.

Responsibilities

  • Complete trade training, workplace competencies and apprenticeship requirements
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of underground mining equipment, including conveyors, pumps, hydraulic systems and longwall infrastructure
  • Participate in planned maintenance activities and breakdown response
  • Develop skills in fault finding across hydraulic and mechanical systems
  • Comply with site procedures, standards and contribute to a strong safety culture
  • Work collaboratively with the maintenance team to support reliable mining operations

Apprentice Mechanical Fitter - 2027 Commencement

MRAEL have partnered with Peabody Energy to offer a Mechancial Fitter Apprenticeship, commencing January 2027, hosted at Centurion Mine.

Owned and operated by Peabody Energy, Centurion Mine is building a high-performing team committed to setting new benchmarks in underground coal mining. Centurion has now transitioned into longwall production, marking a significant step in establishing a world-class underground operation as one of Queensland's newest underground longwall operations.

About the Role:

As an Apprentice, you will follow a structured, industry-specific training plan. You will learn on the job from industry experts while completing your Certificate III in Electrotechnology. This fixed-term position operates on a balanced lifestyle roster, and we strongly encourage local region residents to apply.

You will gain exposure to a range of underground electrical equipment and systems while developing a strong understanding of safe work practices, fault finding, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll work alongside experienced Mechanical Fitters, gain exposure to some of the mining industry's most advanced underground equipment, and receive the training, mentoring and support needed to become a qualified tradesperson.

Who are we seeking?

In the fixed-term position, the successful candidate will show an ability to work safely in an underground mining environment, demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills, be motivated to learn and develop new skills, and have the ability to work constructively within a team.

The positions will be offered on a roster arrangement. Local residents are encouraged to apply.

Students currently completing Year 12 are welcome to apply.If Year 12 has already been completed, the minimum requirement is that candidates achieved a Pass in Pre-vocational English and Mathematics or possess equivalent qualifications.

  • Current driver's licence (or ability to obtain one)
  • Must reside within the Moranbah, Mackay, or coalfields region.
