Transdev John Holland Buses – Randwick NSW is seeking a 1st Year Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to support a team maintaining our bus fleet. The role is based at Port Botany, Randwick and Waverley depots and includes TAFE study at Wetherill Park, with a 4‑year apprenticeship path.

Applicants should have an interest in automotive work, basic tools experience, a NSW driving licence (HR upgrade possible), and a commitment to 4 years of hands-on training.

Qualifications

• Interest in automotive industry with hands-on experience preferred.
• Experience using hand and power tools is advantageous.
• Must hold a current NSW Driver's Licence and be willing to upgrade to HR if required.
• Commitment to completing a 4-year apprenticeship including TAFE study.
• Ability to record accurate maintenance information.

Responsibilities

• Assist tradespeople in repair, service, and inspection of buses and related vehicles.
• Maintain engines, transmissions, and driveline components.
• Diagnose ignition and electrical system issues.
• Diagnose and repair brakes, steering, and suspension systems.
• Identify, report and repair vehicle defects.
• Support with spare parts issuing and stock management.
• Keep workshop clean and safe by sweeping floors and emptying bins.
• Operate light workshop machinery and mobility equipment.
• Complete maintenance records using computer-based systems.

Your impact:

As a 1st Year Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, you will support a team of Automotive Trades staff (Mechanics, Panel Beaters, Spray Painters, Auto Electricians etc) to maintain the safety, reliability and performance of our bus fleet. Our depots are based at Port Botany, Randwick and Waverley (near Bondi Junction train station).

What you bring

Experience & Qualifications:

• Must have some proven interest in the automotive industry
• Hands‑on automotive or mechanical experience including the use of related hand and power tools (preferred).
• Must have a current NSW drivers licence (Ps accepted) and be willing to upgrade to HR drivers licence if required.
• Commitment to a 4‑year apprenticeship opportunity including TAFE study at Wetherill Park
• Computer literacy with the ability to record accurate maintenance information

What you will do:

• Assist qualified Tradespeople in the repair, servicing, maintaining and inspection our fleet of buses and ancillary vehicles
• Repairs and maintenance of engines, transmissions and drivelines
• Diagnose and repair ignition and other electrical systems.
• Diagnose and repair brake, steering and suspension systems.
• Identify, report and repair vehicle defects.
• Support Trades staff with spare parts issuing and allocation.
• Cleaning of the workshop including sweeping floors and emptying bins.
• Operate light machinery such as pedestrian forklift, yard scrubber, floor scrubber, bin lifter.
• Complete maintenance records accurately using computer-based systems.

Hours of work:

6:00am-2:30pm Monday to Friday

Depot locations:

Please note that that we have 3 depots (Port Botany, Randwick and Waverley) and there will be a requirement to work at all 3 depots on a regular basis throughout the course of the 4-year apprenticeship.

TAFE study is held at Wetherill Park.

Additional requirements:

National Police Check, medical including drug and alcohol screening, references and proof of work rights.
