About the research group

The research group "Physics of Nanostructured Materials" (PNM) studies the fundamental physics of novel materials such as graphene and other 2D materials in the context of atomic-scale structural manipulation using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, single-atom spectroscopy, and computational physics.

We are looking for a motivated and talented individual to join the group as a postdoctoral researcher (maternity leave substitute).

The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in leading the research field together with national and international collaborators as a member of a highly skilled team. The research project is related to 2D materials and their study using advanced correlative microscopy methods (scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) and high energy-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy.

Key responsibilities

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration. Specifically:

  • You are involved in research related to atomic-scale structural manipulation of low-dimensional materials using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, and in publishing the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • You will support doctoral students and other group members in their research involving experiments, data analysis and preparation of results for publication.
  • You engage in teaching (independently and/or in a team), including co-teaching a course about Python, within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You may occasionally be involved in the organization of meetings, conferences and symposiums.
  • You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
  • Completed doctoral degree in physics or a related field.
  • Hands‑on experience with atomic‑resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, atomic‑force microscopy, and related methods, demonstrated through academic thesis or publications.
  • Experience in Python programming is required, teaching experience in Python programming is an advantage.
  • Experience in teaching research-based laboratory courses is an advantage.
  • Experience in mentoring bachelor and master's students during their thesis work is an advantage.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level or equivalent).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and ability to present research findings effectively.
Research project

We offer an attractive research project at the cutting‑edge of the research field.
