The University of Vienna invites applications for the University Assistant (Predoc) position in the 56 Faculty of Mathematics. You will join the research group around Univ.-Prof. Anton Mellit, PhD, studying geometry and topology of moduli spaces and their connections with representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and knot invariants.

The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. It consists of active research groups in a wide range of fields, starting from logical foundations, bridging all classical core subjects, and up to concrete applications in industry. As part of the Faculty, the Institute of Mathematics represents the entire discipline of mathematics in research and teaching, without making an arbitrary separation into pure and applied fields.

Your professional field of activity:

As a University Assistant (Praedoc), you will complement the research team around Univ.-Prof. Anton Mellit, PhD. The group studies the geometry and topology of moduli spaces and their connections with representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and knot invariants. Our ideal candidate has a strong interest in one or more of these fields, can easily integrate into our team, independently contribute to current research, and work with responsibility for results.

The start of the contract is the 1st of december 2026 or later, the exact starting date is negotiable. The employment period is 4 years from the beginning of the contract.

Our research focuses on the field of geometry and topology of moduli spaces and their connections with representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and knot invariants. As a team, a positive, inclusive, and respectful working environment is important to us, and we regularly exchange ideas on current topics and projects in our group meetings.

Active Participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

• Collaboration and research in the field of geometry and topology of moduli spaces and their connections with representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and knot invariants:
  o Development of own solutions as part of the research group of Prof. Mellit.
  o Conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12 - 18 month is expected.
  o Membership in the Vienna School of Mathematics and active participation in its activities will be required.
• Interdisciplinary colalboration:
  o You participate in international scientific collaborations, as well as international conerences and workshops.
• Collaboration in teaching and administration:
  o You participate in the administration of the institute, teaching and research.
  o You hold courses and examinations in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement and you (co)-supervise students.

Required Qualifications/Position Requirement:

• Master studies in mathematics, or a related field completed and certificate provided in due time before the start of the contract (if the Master’s degree programme is still ongoing, the final certificate have to be submitted in any case in due time prior to the commencement of employment)
• Emphasis in one or more of the following areas: geometry and topology of moduli spaces and their connections with representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and knot invariants
• A strong mathematical background and potential for independent research
• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
• You are a team player with high social and communicative competence.
• You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.

Employment: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a nonextension declaration.

B1 basic level (praedoc): EUR 3,776.10 on a full-time basis (14 times per year). The actual salary is finally determined depending on professional experience and qualification. The gross salary covers all benefits of the employee in quantitative and qualitative terms (= all-in payment).
