Take our proven bioprinting platform into its next generation.
At Biomotion, we build advanced 3D bioprinters that help researchers create realistic human tissue models for drug screening. Our goal is to make 3D cell culture reproducible, simple and reliable, paving the way for the next discoveries in pharmaceutical research. Our systems are in the hands of proto-customers, and we are now moving into the commercial market and toward CE marking.
We are a small startup team in Vienna: we work closely together, decide fast and see our work go straight into the product.
YOUR ROLE
You own the architecture of our bioprinting systems and guide the platform through CE marking, series production and future product generations, with simplicity and manufacturability as guiding principles.
You report to our CTO and split your time about 50/50 between concepts and hands‑on work.
- Own the system architecture and the trade‑offs between subsystems: continuously drive simplification, challenge unnecessary complexity, and document design decisions and their rationale.
- Drive development prioritisation: distinguish must‑have from good‑to‑have and protect the critical path.
- Manage requirements end‑to‑end: translate research needs and the CE requirements set by leadership into clear, testable product requirements, such as size, weight and interfaces, and align them with our CAD engineer. Maintain the boundary between scope and backlog.
- Develop concepts from sketch to 3D print to metal part, in fast test cycles.
- Decide make or buy, select suppliers and work with machine shops.
- Design for manufacturing, assembly and certification: make compliance a design input, not a late‑stage check, and document every decision and its rationale.
- Engineer with CE requirements in mind: review the design for compliance gaps and resolve them systematically, together with our regulatory partner.
- Work closely with our CAD engineer, electronics, software and assembly team to ensure architecture decisions translate into buildable, testable hardware.
WHERE YOU START
Your first months focus on the path to CE marking:
- Learn the platform in depth and set the architecture roadmap with the CTO, with a clear focus on simplification and compliance readiness.
- Conduct a structured CE gap analysis across mechanical, electrical and software subsystems, and prioritise findings into must‑fix and risk‑accepted categories.
- Develop the next printhead generation (mounting, extrusion, electronics), with simplicity and compliance designed in from the start.
- Bring components and subsystems in line with CE requirements and establish the documentation baseline for the technical file.
WHAT YOU BRING
This is a hands‑on engineering role: you work closely with the team, but you don't manage it. You bring:
- A degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics or similar, plus a few years of product development.
- A track record of electromechanical products taken to manufacture.
- Demonstrable ability to simplify systems: you have made products smaller, cheaper or more reliable by questioning assumptions.
- Experience managing requirements across disciplines: you know how to separate must-haves from nice‑to‑haves and defend that line under pressure.
- A systems view, and enough electronics to wire up and test prototypes.
- Strong SolidWorks skills (the only CAD tool we use).
- Practical knowledge of CNC machining, sheet metal and 3D printing.
- Experience designing for safety and EMC testing, and documenting it for CE conformity.
- Having taken a device through CE marking.
- German (many of our Austrian suppliers prefer it).
- Experience with lab, medical or other regulated devices.
- Preparing products for series production with external manufacturers.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Ownership of the architecture of a device on its way to market.
- Fast iteration: in‑house 3D printing, workshop, CNC, external partners.
- Short decision paths in a small team: your prioritisation decisions have direct impact.
There is a lot to do in a short time, and priorities will shift. If that suits you, let's talk.
