Job Description
The Supervisor – Gate 2 position within the Aviation & Aero Engine MRO division is a key leadership role in the Operations department, specifically overseeing the Special Process section of the Machine Shop unit. Reporting to the Manager, Team Leader, or Senior Supervisor – Machine Shop, this role supervises a skilled team including Principal, Senior, Lead, and Technicians. The Supervisor must be a highly qualified machinist with expert-level knowledge of machining processes such as grinding, drilling, tapping, reaming, broken screw extraction, Heli-coil installation, milling, and other mechanical tasks related to aircraft and engine components. This position requires the ability to plan, direct, control, and lead all activities within the Machine Shop to ensure high quality and efficient operations.
Responsibilities
- Workflow Management (40%): Plan, organize, direct, and control the Machine Shop workflow to ensure production proceeds without delays.
- Coordination (15%): Collaborate with customers, other departments, and shops to meet work requirements and target service dates.
- Supervision (15%): Oversee daily activities of the Machine Shop, ensuring efficient operations and quality standards compliance.
- Staff Training and Development (10%): Recommend and implement improvements to work practices; facilitate internal and external training to enhance team expertise.
- Compliance and Safety (10%): Ensure strict adherence to company quality, safety, health, and environmental regulations; implement related objectives and programs.
- Process Improvement (5%): Approve and implement new procedures, processes, and shop capabilities including acquisition of materials and equipment.
- Other Duties (5%): Administer company regulations related to staff; propose innovative ideas for process and individual development.
Qualifications
- Associate, vocational, or technical school degree relevant to the role; a bachelor's degree is preferred.
- D3 and D2 level authorizations in machine shop practices are required.
- Minimum of 10 years progressive machinist experience in the aviation industry.
- At least 2 years of supervisory experience managing technical teams.
Skills
- Operational Ownership & Accountability: Proven ability to manage daily output, quality, safety, and schedule performance of a machine shop.
- Team Leadership & Supervision: Skilled in directing and supervising technicians, task allocation, performance monitoring, coaching, and enforcing standards.
- Planning & Workflow Management: Expertise in organizing manpower, workload priorities, and resources to optimize productivity and avoid delays.
- People Development & Continuous Improvement: Experience facilitating training, driving improved work practices, and championing operational excellence initiatives.
- Machining Process Oversight: Strong knowledge of grinding, drilling, tapping, reaming, milling, Heli-coil installation, and related repair methods.
- Technical Coordination & Cross-Functional Support: Effective collaboration with customers, engineering, planners, and other shops to meet technical requirements and deadlines.
- Quality & Regulatory Compliance Control: Ensures adherence to OEM, airworthiness, and company standards through inspections and procedural enforcement.
- Safety, Risk & Resource Management: Implements safety programs, identifies risks, and manages tools, equipment, and materials to maintain a compliant and safe shop environment.
Education
Completion of an associate, vocational, or technical school degree relevant to machining and machine shop operations is required. A bachelor's degree is preferred to complement technical expertise. Relevant certifications such as D3 and D2 level authorizations in machine shop practices are essential to fulfill the requirements of this supervisory role.
