The Senior Engineer - Process Automation connects plant operating requirements with control engineering, optimization technology and higher-level digital applications. Key Responsibilities
- The position provides engineering leadership across the design, implementation and lifecycle management of process automation systems.
- Review plant automation requirements involving base layer process control, APC, RTO, alarm management, digitalization and operational information systems.
- Assess control loop performance and recommend improvements that stabilize processes, increase production yield and reduce operating costs.
- Monitor application uptime, technical performance, financial benefits, standardization and obsolescence.
- Identify weaknesses in existing automation systems and develop technically sound, commercially viable improvement plans.
- Ensure that proposed upgrades comply with OT-IT cybersecurity policies, OEM recommendations and approved engineering standards.
- Develop and update procedures, technical standards and controls governing process automation activities.
- Analyze alternative automation solutions and recommend the most effective option for plant operating conditions.
- Lead feasibility studies and proof-of-concept evaluations performed by consultants or specialist technology providers.
- Examine the technical and financial viability of new automation, optimization and digitalization applications.
- Prepare and review scopes of work, tender documents and technical bid evaluations for approved projects.
- Direct external consultants during engineering, installation, testing, commissioning and performance verification.
- Develop or review functional specifications, system designs, as-built documents, operating manuals, training materials and maintenance procedures.
- Review process automation documentation during the CONCEPT, SELECT and DEFINE phases of technical projects.
- Assess specification changes and verify their alignment with approved project objectives and engineering requirements.
- Review and approve process control narratives for new projects and modifications to existing facilities.
- Troubleshoot process automation systems and related applications to restore availability and prevent recurring failures.
- Design and implement optimization programs that allow the plant to operate at efficient conditions with maximum sustainable yield.
- Lead alarm rationalization workshops and ensure that approved recommendations are implemented within agreed timelines.
- Coordinate alarm suppression and performance improvement activities while preserving safe plant operation.
- Supervise the development of new APC controllers and the revamping of existing controller applications.
- Lead closed-loop RTO implementation and maintain the availability and reliability of existing RTO solutions.
- Evaluate vendors and contractors technically during prequalification, tendering and procurement activities.
- Verify that automation work is performed in accordance with HSE controls, OT security requirements and international standards.
- Conduct technical knowledge-sharing sessions and train operating, engineering and maintenance personnel.
- Develop assigned employees through practical coaching, technical guidance and structured capability-building activities.
- Contribute technical estimates to functional budgets and support implementation of approved work plans.
- Investigate budget or performance variances and provide recommendations for corrective action.
- Prepare technical inputs for management information reports, progress updates and performance reviews.
- Introduce new tools and engineering techniques that improve the quality, speed and consistency of automation processes.
- Benchmark internal practices against recognized industry standards and convert findings into practical improvement initiatives.
Ideal Profile

Required qualifications and experience include:
- Bachelor 's degree in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Process Control Engineering or an equivalent professional qualification.
- At least eight years of process control, optimization or automation engineering experience within the oil and gas industry.
- Strong knowledge of DCS, BLPC, APC, RTO, CLPM, AMS, dashboards and process information applications.
- Practical involvement in the implementation of at least two RTO projects and four APC projects.
- Experience leading alarm rationalization, alarm suppression and control performance improvement activities.
- Proven capability in developing, reviewing and executing process control and automation standards.
- Knowledge of diverse industrial processes, DCS platforms and industrial control system applications.
- Detailed understanding of process control requirements during the CONCEPT, SELECT and DEFINE project phases.
- Awareness of national and international engineering regulations, codes and technical standards.
- Working knowledge of HSE principles applicable to oil and gas facilities.
- Ability to organize engineering activities, coordinate stakeholders, examine technical evidence and maintain accurate records.
- Strong written communication, technical reporting and presentation capabilities.
